ABSTRACT
2
The launching of the China-Asean Free Trade Agreement last year highlights a new era of pan- Asian
collaboration. It creates the third largest free-trade area in the world and the largest one by
population. On the contrary with what is commonly believed, Asians are very diverse. It is difficult to
generalize when doing business in Asia, even for the Asian themselves. Different stages of
modernization, as well as diverse race, ethnic, religion and languages are some of the more obvious
diversity among the Asian. The papers will present recent research on Chinese and Indonesian top
managers and business leaders, how they lead their team and organization in Indonesia (Chinese
Leaders) and China (Indonesian Leaders).
While Indonesian expatriates in China perform their leadership roles with strong focus on managing
the working climate and caring about the people they are working with; Chinese expatriates in
Indonesian perform their leadership roles with strong emphasize on motivating higher work
engagement and increasing working performance. The Indonesian believe more that ‘happy workers
are productive workers’, and the Chinese tends to rely their success by setting correct goal, giving
clear instruction, controlling by measurable result indicators, and motivating by fair rewarding and
punishment.
Those and more of the commonalities and differences on the cross-cultural leadership of the
Chinese and Indonesian leaders will be demonstrated and discussed.

INDONESIA: ULTIMATE IN DIVERSITY
8
● Indonesia has around 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over
centuries, and influenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese and European sources significantly.
● The main ethnic group is the Javanese, who comprise 42% of the population, and are
politically and culturally dominant.
● A sense of Indonesian nationhood exists alongside strong regional identities. Society is
largely harmonious, although social ,religious and ethnic tensions have triggered
horrendous violence.
● The country has extensive natural resources, including crude oil, natural gas, tin, copper
and gold, which attracts more and more foreign investment in recent years.

Further information: Names of Indonesia
The name Indonesia derives from the Latin and Greek Indus,
and the Greek nèsos, meaning "island".[9] The name dates to
the 18th century, far predating the formation of independent
Indonesia.[10] In 1850, George Windsor Earl, an English
ethnologist, proposed the terms Indunesians — and, his
preference, Malayunesians — for the inhabitants of the "Indian Archipelago or Malayan Archipelago".[11] In
the same publication, a student of Earl's, James Richardson Logan, used Indonesia as a synonym for Indian
Archipelago.[12][13] However, Dutch academics writing in East Indies publications were reluctant to use
Indonesia. Instead, they used the terms Malay Archipelago (Maleische Archipel); the Netherlands East Indies
(Nederlandsch Oost Indië), popularly Indië; the East (de Oost); and Insulinde.[14]
After 1900, the name Indonesia became more common in academic circles outside the Netherlands, and

CHINESE VALUES:
WORK CENTRALITY & FUTURE ORIENTATION
22
• With a very large population and a rather inhospitable
natural environment, securing even survival level
economic output has required considerable effort. Put
simply, people have needed to work hard to sustain
themselves – and still do. (Westwood, R. I. & Lok, P. 2003)
FIGHT FOR MOREWORK CENTRALITY
• Both Chinese contexts display a high work centrality
orientation and a highly pragmatic, instrumental
view of work (Westwood, R. I. & Lok, P. 2003)
• Work thus has very instrumental ends for Hong Kong
people – away of facilitating upward social mobility,
gaining economic security, and achieving status and
prestige.
• Leisure and life outside of work was insignificant, a
notion shared by most of the participants: Of course
time spent at work is more important. Work directly
relates to my income and company profit.
• Work was critical in the daily lives of these Chinese
workers. (Li, J., & Madsenb, J. 2009)
• Chinese have been, and generally still are, willing to
exert enormous amounts of effort in search of familial
improvements and security(Harrell, H. 1985)
• Chinese culture is strongly materialistic. This value
orientation has been given free expression in Hong Kong
where the socio-economic and political context has
allowed for a relatively unfettered pursuit of material
rewards, the accumulation of wealth, and vigorous
consumption patterns (Westwood, R. I. & Lok, P. 2003)
FUTURE-ORIENTATION
• On the long-term side one finds values oriented towards the future, like thrift (saving) and
persistence. (Hofstede, G. 1993)
• Confucian dynamism referred positively to Confucian values of persistence, greater respect for status,
higher value on thrift, and a greater sense of shame as future-minded mentality. (Li, J., & Madsenb, J. 2009)
• Lim (2003) defines thrift and hard work as one of CWE.

In recent years, the Southeast Asia region is filled with a variety of problems, ranging from the economic crisis, political crisis, family crisis and social
crisis. Within the spiritual dimension, there is found that many people lost their meaningful life. Caused by the crisis of faith, they get caught up in
confusion about the existences of their lives, and engage in self-destructive conducts. All this effect is due to the emptiness of the spiritual dimension
within the individual. The effect of lack of spiritual meaning will impact on reduction of happiness, psychological and physical well-being.
