What are they? • Keyboard shortcuts are alternate ways to do something that you would ordinarily use the mouse for. • One or more keys can be used together for a specific function. • Work differently in different applications (Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, etc) • Shortcuts also include the ‘function’ keys (e.g. F11). • Windows machines only, sorry! www.bournemouth.ac.uk 2
    3. Keys you will use ESC : Escape   : Enter / Return   : TAB ALT : ALT Ctrl : Control   : Shift • You may use some of these keys in connection with others, to form a specific task. www.bournemouth.ac.uk 3

Useful Function Keys: F1 : Application ‘Help’ menu F10 : Activates ‘menu bar’ options F2 : ‘Rename’ file F11 : Full screen (Internet Browser) Prnt F3 : ‘Find’ dialogue box Scrn : Copies screen content to clipboard F5 : ‘Refresh/Reload’ screen : Opens Windows ‘start’ menu F7 : ‘Spell check’ document ESC : Escape www.bournemouth.ac.uk 4
    5. Instructions • Press the first key and then, when holding it down, press the second (and third if necessary) key to perform action. • Example: 1. Press ‘Ctrl’ key and, while holding Ctrl C it down, press ‘C’ key to copy selected/highlighted text. 2. Press ‘Ctrl’ key and, while holding Ctrl  it down, press ‘right-arrows’ key to progress the cursor one whole word to the right. www.bournemouth.ac.uk 5

    7. Useful Shortcuts: Text (2) Ctrl  : Move cursor one word to right Ctrl  : Move one word to left Ctrl  : Move one paragraph up  Ctrl : Move one paragraph down Ctrl  : Highlight one word at a time,  in the direction of the arrow www.bournemouth.ac.uk 7
