  • He kept meticulous drawings of his work for his students in the form of six large illustrated anatomical tables. When he found that some of these were being widely copied, he published them all in 1538 under the title Tabulae Anatomicae Sex .

  • PECTORAL: a 3 part muscle, originating atthe clavicle and the sternum, tucks underthe deltoid, and ends (or inserted) ontothe humerus bone.Function: Moves arm forward andacross body; rotates arm inward; lowersarm from vertical position.EXTERNAL OBLIQUES: A bundle ofmuscles originating on the ribs and isinserted onto the iliac crest of the pelvis.Function: forward bending flexing andtwisting of the trunk.SERRATUS ANTERIOR: a bundle ofmuscles that link ribs to the scapula.Function: they pull scapula downwardand forward, and hold scapula against therib cage.RECTUS ABDOMINOUS: (The six packs.)Originates on the pubic crest and insertsonto the ribs and xiphoid process of thesternum. Function: Flexes spine.APONEUROSIS: the flat sheet of tendonsthat help hold muscles and guts in place.(Watch for the places where theaponeuroses of the body can be seenfrom the outside.)Remember also the STERNOMASTOIDmuscle of the neck.
  • TRAPEZIUS: a very long diamondshaped muscle. It originates onthe Occipital bone of the skull to thethoracic vertebrae of the spine, andinserts onto both scapula andclavicle.Function: this muscle brings thescapulae together, moves them upand down, and draws the headbackward.LATISSIMUS DORSI: a very longmuscle that wraps around the torso. It originates on the vertebra andiliac crest, and inserts on thescapula.Function: Brings the scapulatogether, throws back shoulders.Pulls shoulders down. (Watch forthe vertical bulge on the side of thetrunk).TERES MAJOR: Scapula toHumerus; motion of the arm.TERES MINOR: Scapula toHumerus; motion of the arm.INFRASPINATUS: Scapula toHumerus; motion of the arm.
  • SERRATUS ANTERIOR:Note how this bundle ofmuscles tucks under theLatissimus Dorsi.
  • ARMS: (MEDIAL/ANTERIOR VIEW)DELTOID: a triangle shaped musclecomposed of 7 bundles. Origin on thescapula and the clavicle, inserted ontothe humerus.Function: moves arm forward andbackward, and elevates arm (alongwith the Serratus Anterior andTrapezius for this last motion).BICEPS: A two-armed muscle, botharms originate on the scapula, andattach to the Radius.Function: bends arm at elbow.BRACHIORADIALIS: It attaches thehumerus to the radius.Function: Bends arm at elbow; whilearm is bent, pronates (rotates palmdown) forearm; when arm is straight,supinates (rotates palm up) forearm.FLEXOR CARPI ULNARIS: Humerusand Oleocranon to the Metacarpals.Function: Bends wristPALMARUS LONGUS: Bends hand atwristFLEXOR CARPI RADIALUS: Humerusto Metacarpals. Function: Bends wrist.
  • ARM: (POSTERIORVIEW)TRICEPS: A 3-headedmuscle--two headsoriginate at the top of thehumerus, the 3rdoriginates at the scapula,and all 3 attach onto theulna via a large flattendon called theolecranon.Function: straightens theelbow.EXTENSOR DIGITORUM:Origin: Humerus.Attachment: Phalanges.Function: Straightensfingers and hand, spreadsapart the fingers.
  • ARMS: (LATERAL VIEW)Note the positions ofDeltoid, Triceps, Biceps, andBrachioradialis.
  • LEGS: (ANTERIOR VIEW) Note the“Hotdog in the Bun” configuration,including the:RECTUS FEMORIS: One of thestrongest muscles. Origin: Iliac crest.Insertion: patella.Function: straightens knee, helps tobend thigh at hip, moves thigh awayfrom body at hip.VASTUS LATERALIS: Femur to Patella.Function: Same as Rectus Femoris.VASTUS MEDIALIS: Femur to Patella.Function: Same as Rectus Femoris.Also the SARTORIUS: The longestmuscle of the body. Origin: Iliac crest.Insertion: shaft of the tibia.Function: Bends thigh at hip, bendsknee, moves thigh away from body,rotates thigh outward, rotates lower leginward.GRACILLUS: Pubis to Tibia. Function:Bends thigh at hip, bends knee, closesthigh from outstretched position.TIBIALIS ANTERIOR: Origin: tibia.Insertion: first metatarsal.Function: Raises foot, turns soles offeet toward each other.

Insertion:shaft of the Femur.Function: moves thighs backward,returns leg from seated to standingposition, rotates leg outward, pressesbuttocks together.GLUTEUS MEDIUS: Ilium to the Femur.Function: Moves leg from standing tooutstretched side position.GASTROCNEMIUS: Origin: femur,Insertion: via Achilles tendon tocalcaneus (heel bone)Function: Points foot, bends knee;turns soles of feet towards each other.SOLEUS: Fibula and Tibia via Achillestendon to calcaneus (heel bone).Function: Same as Gastrocnemius.SEMITENDINOSUS: Ishial tuberosityof the pelvis to the Tibia. Function:Straightens thigh backward; rotatesthigh inward; bends lower leg; rotatesleg inward.BICEPS FEMORIS: Femur to Fibula.Function: Straightens thighbackward; rotates thigh outward;bends knee; rotates lower legoutwards.
