How geography impacts people

  1. 1. Impact of Geography ● Physical features impact economy, population, level of development and culture How do you think physical features impact these areas?
  2. 2. The Sahara and Sahel Because it is a vast desert, the Sahara & Sahel makes life challenging. The majority of those who live in this area raise sheep, goats, and camels. People who live in the Sahara tend to be nomads (move from place to place) because they must constantly find water and grazing areas.
  3. 3. Savannas Because trees are scarce their homes are often made out of grass and twigs. They are often cattle herders. Because water is more abundant, savanna peoples are typically less nomadic than people in the Sahara and Sahel. If they migrate (move from one place to another), they tend to do so according to predictable wet and dry dry seasons.
  4. 4. Ethnic Groups ● ● There are many different ethnic groups in Africa. Ethnic groups are based on biology. – What determines your ethnic group? ● ● ● Race Physical Features Ancestry Ethnic Groups of Africa Include: ● Arabs ● Bantu ● White Africans ● Swahili ● Afro-Arabs
  5. 5. Religious Groups Some religions may be more popular among certain ethnic groups than others. However, just because people are part of a certain ethnic group, that doesn't mean they automatically belong to a certain ethnic group. For example.. - Not all white people are Christian or Jewish. - Not all black Africans hold to native faiths. - Just because people are Arabs doesn't mean that they are Muslim.
  6. 6. Arabs ● ● ● North African nations like Egypt and Morocco have large Arab populations. Arab peoples have dark brown complexions. Islam tends to be the main religion among Arabs. (others are practiced however)
  7. 7. Bantu People ● ● Originally from C. Africa, but over thousands of years migrated to southern Africa. Brought to southern Africa, advanced forms of agriculture and iron tools. (One of the largest migrations in history!) ● Tried to justify racism (apartheid)= white & black settlers arrived at the same time. (Equal claim to land?!)
  8. 8. Ashanti ● ● ● The Ashanti formed a powerful West African empire before European colonization. Today, they are a major ethnic group in western Africa. Ashanti practice a number of traditional, African religions. However, Christianity is the predominant religion among most.
  9. 9. Swahili ● ● ● The Swahili people live along the coast of East Africa. Many Africans who are not Swahili speak some form of the Swahili language. Most Swahili people are Muslim. (however many traditional and other religions are practiced).
  10. 10. Literacy More than 1 in 3 adults cannot read. ● ● ● ● ● Literacy is the ability to read & write. Due to colonization and oppression, much of Africa's population is illiterate. Low literacy makes it difficult for African nations to compete economically. This keeps many African nations poor and the standard of living low. Great deal of effort is going into improving literacy in Africa.
