Workshop from Netroots Nation #NN13. As the ’80s hit says: “One thing leads to another.” That’s the most basic description of a theory of change. If you want to make a difference in this world, you need to plot out how. In order to reach our goals, we need to understand where we are now, what barriers exist between here and there and how to get there. Though strategy and planning might sound complicated and tedious, we’ve found ways to make it fun and practical. We’ve developed a game-based approach for developing a theory of change that has helped organizers, environmental advocates, immigrant rights activists and more plan, execute and win campaigns.   • HOLLY: I can do something like the lightbulbs for each “I” slide (e.g. Intention: fundraising thermometer or upwards trending chart). The graphics would all be in the same style as these lightbulbs. We’d need to settle on each graphic since they require a bit of work to find / create / manipulate / recolor. Each would have an animation (e.g. fundraising thermometer would fill).

The most compelling organizations crackle with electricity, as if a current was coursing through them. At the LightBox Collaborative, we believe there are four currents that flow through compelling causes…Working together, these four currents can supercharge your impact. The most effective organizations are hard-wired for success as these currents course through programs and operations alike.
  • And here is the model that we often teach folks – the core elements to a smart campaign strategy
  • But again and again we are struck by the fact that folks struggle to set clear, quantifiable goals. So when we dig into that, we often find that it’s because too many advocates don’t have a clearly articulated theory of change.
