  • 2. The two things newspapers do best are TEACHING and STORY TELLING F u ll O f • GET HARD FACTS S t o r ie s • (tuition prices are going up by $8/credit hour) • FIND THE DRAMA BEHIND THE STORY • (student X will not be able to afford the rate hike and will have to drop out of college)
  • 3. The place you put the information you gather is in your notebook!TIPS:• Make up a shorthand system• Use tape and post-its to insert items• Use multiple colors to organize like ideas
  • 4. 1. Start taking notes as soon as you get your new assignment! In your note book, on your first page for the new assignment write down: 1. questions 2. lists of people and contact info 3. Ideas you have for what might make people care 4. Any ideas you have for photos, graphics or sidebars that might help tell this story. Bring these ideas to your teacher and/or editor at the beginning so if they are good you will know to work on them.
  • 5. 2. TAKE INTERNET RESEARCH NOTES • Directory look ups • Contact info • Background for stories
  • 6. 3. Write interview prep notes Determine sources Contact info Write key questions in priority order
  • 7. 4. Take the actual interview notes: Note WHAT YOU OBSERVE Note WHAT YOU ARE TOLD. Write down quotes Write down facts Write down all people, places & events mentionedYeah, I knew Antoine before he committedsuicide. We were in PSY 101 together lastspring. He was a hard worker in class, but whenwe met up after class he seemed different.
  • 8. 5. TAKE POST INTERVIEW NOTES • Directly after the interview make additional notes.

AFTER INTERVIEW WRITE OUTLINE NOTES• Work on a lead• Write article theme/focus• Ask yourself questions and do your thinking in writing.Angle: Teens face increasedpressure and there are fewresources to help them.Questions: How big is the problemof teen suicide? What are the riskfactors? What are schools doing?
  • 10. Good note taking is essential to good reporting.
  • 11. WHAT’S IN YOUR NOTEBOOK?If you only have a few names and ideas scribbled down, you are not making the most of your notebook. END
