As media studies evaluation

 1. 1. AS Media Studies Evaluation Holly Crossley Turner
 2. 2. In what ways does your horror film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real horror openings?

Used conventions:

Eerie music to introduced the genre of the film

Long dramatic opening titles (based on the ones from ‘I still know what you did last summer’) which builds suspense.

Challenged conventions

No deaths in our opening two minutes.

 3. 3. How does your horror film opening represent particular social groups?

My media product mainly represents contemporary social groups . There is a teenage girl who plays the innocent victim and a social outcast who plays the killer.

I wanted the victim to look like a stereotypical teenage girl . Therefore she is dressed in normal every day 21 st century clothes.

The killer was meant to be a social outcast . Therefore I made her wear odd clothes (for a teenage girl) such as a blouse with the top button done up and a crucifix.

 4. 4. What kind of media institution might distribute your horror film opening and why?

Icon Film Distribution

Why? They offer independent film

releases and have recently

released horrors such as

Buried and ‘The Killer

Inside Me’ so have

experience in marketing

horror/thriller films.

 5. 5. Who would be the audience for your horror film opening?

The audience for our horror

film opening would be

teenagers as we are

marketing it as a teen horror

film

We would classify the film at 15 as we would have a wider audience compared to the one we’d have if we classified it at 18.

 6. 6. How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract my audience I did some research into the conventions of horror movies . I noted which ones were the most common and included them.

I also attracted my audience through the actors I chose. I chose two teenage girls who are around the age of the targeted audience. This would attract the audience as they feel they can relate to the main characters as they are of a similar age .

When making the opening titles I used hardly any capital letters . I believe this gives them a young feel which would consequently attract our audience.

 7. 7. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the horror film opening?

How to work Final Cut Express – in particular how to edit effectively.

How to use Livetype – especially how

to create opening titles

which look professional.

How to use Garage band and it’s

many different ways of

composing music or simply

finding a piece of ready

made music.

 8. 8. Other technologies learnt

The many different functions of the camera we used. The camera we used was a Canon Legira FS200.

How to upload

slideshows on to

‘ Slideshare’

 9. 9. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel like you have learnt in the progression from it to the horror film opening?

The main thing I I feel like I have learnt how to edit footage properly in FinalCut.

Preliminary task editing Horror film opening editing
 10. 10. Other things I have learnt

How to add filters in final cut.

I also learnt to film more than you need for editing purposes.

To keep dialogue to a minimum as the sound quality of our equipment is not very good.
