  3. 3. The biology of sleep - circadian rhythms<br />Melatonin <br />The retina detects failing light, and the level of melatonin gradually increases<br />Not a sedative, but a cue for sleep<br />In humans, melatonin induces heat loss, reduces arousal and related brain activity <br />
  4. 4. The biology of sleep - circadian rhythms<br />Cortisol<br />The retina detects dawn, and the level of melatonin decreases while cortisol increases<br />In humans, increases blood pressure and blood sugar ready to find food<br />

  10. 10. Can we affect Circadian Rhythms?<br />YES!<br />Students need to have access to elements that reduce the production of melatonin:<br />Light (preferably natural)<br />Fresh Air<br />Cooler Temperatures<br />Movement<br />And if everything else fails, a cup of coffee!<br />
