Transcript of "The Pill"

  1. 1. quot;The Pillquot;
  2. 2. What is it? The Pill is a hormonal method, which means it alters your body’s hormonal cycle to prevent pregnancy. The pills are made up of synthetic (man made) hormones and must be taken daily at the same time.
  3. 3. How Effective Is It? If used perfectly: 99.7% When you factor in human error: 92% That means out of 100 couples that use only the pill, in 1 year, 8 would get pregnant. They offer NO PROTECTION AGAINST STDs.
  4. 4. How Does It Work? The pill works by preventing a woman’s ovaries from releasing an egg each month. It also thickens the cervical mucus, helping to keep sperm out of the uterus. Finally, it causes the lining of the uterus to be thinner, which inhibits implantation.
  5. 5. Advantages The pill can decrease your cramping and menstrual flow, and improve acne. If it is used correctly and consistently, it can be very effective against pregnancy.
  6. 6. Disadvantages The pill must be taken at the SAME TIME EVERY DAY. It offers NO STD PROTECTION. Some medications can decrease the effectiveness of the pill, requiring the couple to use a back up method, such as a condom.
  7. 7. Side Effects The pill can cause weight change, mood change, breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, blood clots, heart attack or stroke. Pills made only of the hormone Progestin can cause irregular periods. Smoking while using the pill can increase your risks.
