Spinal bifida for human interactions

 1. 1. Spinal Bifida By Vanessa Jones
 2. 2. Definition

Spina bifida is a birth defect that involves the incomplete development of the spinal cord or its coverings.

http://www.wikinoticia.com/images/embarazo10/img142.imageshack.us.img142.1509.meningocelevg7.jpg
 3. 3. 2 kinds of characteristics

1.Meningocele involves the meninges, the membranes responsible for covering and protecting the brain and spinal cord. If the meninges push through the hole in the vertebrae.

2. Myelomeningocele is the most severe form of spina bifida. It occurs when the meninges push through the hole in the back, and the spinal cord also pushes though. Most babies who are born with this type of spina bifida also have hydrocephalus , an accumulation of fluid in and around the brain

 4. 4. Effects

Children with spina bifida often have problems with bowel and bladder control, and some may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or other learning difficulties, such as hand-eye coordination problems.

http://www.minclinic.ru/pics/boli%20v%20pozvono4nike5.jpg
 5. 5. Care Needs

Parents of children with spina bifida receive support from a medical team that may include several doctors (such as neurosurgeons, urologists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and general pediatricians), a nurse practitioner, physical and occupational therapists, and a social worker.

http://www.legaljuice.com/doctor%20sign.png http://www.clker.com/cliparts/6/a/f/7/1206556283823989065chlopaya_Nurse.svg.med.png
 6. 6. Treatment

1.Babies with meningocele usually have an operation during infancy in which doctors push the meninges back and close the hole in the vertebrae. Many will have no other health problems later unless there is nerve tissue involved with the sac.

2.Babies with myelomeningocele need more immediate attention and often have surgery within the first 1 to 2 days after birth. During this first surgery, doctors push the spine back into the vertebrae and close the hole to prevent infection and protect the spine.

http://www.anakfoundation.org/imgs/spinabifida.jpg
 7. 7. The end

As you can see this defect is treatable. Even though it is painful there is surgery.
