  • Toxins in Cosmetics
    HyunjooLee
    Major : Chemistry
  • Basic Facts
Our skin is the largest organ
On average, people put 9 to 15 personal care products everyday
People approximately apply 126 different ingredients on their skin
Toxins can be absorbed in the bloodstream in just 90 seconds
More than 125 ingredients are suspected of causing cancer
  • Cosmetics
Substance used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of the human body
    Skin care cream and lotion
    Powders
    Perfumes
    Lipsticks and Lip-gloss
    Nail-polish
    Hair dye and hair spray
    Shampoos
    Bubble Bath
    Deodorants
  • Known Human Carcinogens
  • Contact Dermatitis
Caused commonly by fragrances, or other preservatives, such as parabens, or formaldehydes.
  • Hypothesis
In this experiment, toxins applied through the skin will go through the bloodstream.
  • Methodology
To test toxins that went through the bloodstream, urine test can be performed
Phthalates are examined to metabolite in urine
The enzymatic deconjugation of the phthalate metabolites from their glucuronidatedform
The separation using high-performance liquid chromatography, and detection using isotope-dilution tandem mass spectrometry
  • Important Articles
    Colón and his team
Reported elevated levels of several phthalates in serum samples from young girls with premature breast development
Also examined phthalate monoester metabolites in urine
  • Future
Try to find safer ingredients to put in cosmetics and personal care products
    Avoid toxic chemical ingredients
