1. 1. Alternative Web Searching
2. 2. Alternatives to Google, Bing and Yahoo
The big three search engines are the most common sites that people use to search the internet for information.
While these will provide you with a multitude of options, they may not be the most direct approach.
3. 3. Here are some of my favorite alternatives….
Wolfram Alpha is technically a “computational knowledge engine” instead of a search engine. It will compute answers and retrieve knowledge from various sources based on a question you ask.
http://www.wolframalpha.com/
4. 4. Cont..
GoodSearch donates 50% of sponsored search revenue to charity
http://www.goodsearch.com/
5. 5. Cont..
The Internet Archive
Internet Library of historical collections in digital format.
Literature, movies, television clips, audio, websites
http://www.archive.org/
6. 6. Cont..
ForiSearch lets you search for an image in any language. It’s fascinating to see how different the images are for a search for “school lunch” in Japanese compared to English.
http://www.forisearch.com/
7. 7. Cont…
iSeek is a Targeted Discovery search engine. Once you search, you can narrow down your results based on topics or people associated with each result.
iSeek also provides an Education specific search option
http://www.iseek.com/
8. 8. Cont…
Twitter can be very useful for finding up to the minute info on current happenings. A great example is the amount of info you could find on the crises in Egypt on Twitter hours before it would show up on major news sites.
http://twitter.com/search
9. 9. Where can I find more?
New search engine options are popping up regularly. Folden is a website that gathers and categorizes them:
http://www.folden.info/searchengineinnovations.shtml
