History
Decision was made in 1993
Began for the Freshman class in Fall 1995
Why?
Integration of technology and the curriculum
Part of a master technology plan for campus
Easier and cheaper to manage than large computer labs. Space was a concern
IT Environment
High speed campus fiber backbone
Over 8,000 wired ports at 100 MBS throughout campus.
Wireless access throughout campus
Residence halls have two ports per pillow.

All classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors / screens
Wired ports at every student seat and podium
Wireless access available
Laptop Selection
Selected each year by a committee made up of faculty, staff, and students
Laptops and software suites are purchased by the school on behalf of the students as a condition of enrollment
They are resold to the students and property ownership is transferred

Rose-Hulman is a Self Maintainer – Manufacturer transfers warranty repair responsibility
Rose technicians are trained and certified by the manufacturer

Most repairs can be done in two hours
Loaners are used for extensive jobs that might take a few days

How is it done
Spare parts. Keep stocked with 3-4 of every part of every active laptop model
Each model has one image
Backup personal files, reimage PC, copy files back

Used by graduate students and those without their laptops
Library Instruction
We bring library instruction to the class rather than bringing the class to the library.
Easier for them
Saves us from the need to maintain a suitable computer classroom
We conduct classes upon request at their convenience.
Conclusion
The Rose-Hulman Digital Library is accessible to students no matter where they are.
Computer technology integrated into curriculum and students everyday lives is a given. The laptops removes a number of barriers.
