2. US ENTRY INTO WWII
• March 1941 FDR signed the Lend Lease
Act; which allowed the US government to
lend or lease armaments to Britian.
• Lend Lease Act was suppose to help Great
Britain achieve victory over the Germany’s
Blitzkrieg (lightening attack)
• Lend Lease Act was an informal way for
America to lend aid to the allies without
joining the war.
• August 1941 FDR and Winston Churchill
issued the Atlantic Charter, which outlined
common goals for ending Nazi Tyranny

3. • July 16 1941- in response to Japan’s
invasion of Manchuria, FDR froze
all Japanese assets in America,
cutting off oil supplies to Japan
• December 7, 1941- Japan launched
an air attack on the U.S. naval base
at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
• December 8-FDR asked Congress
to declare war on Japan, Germany
responded by declaring war on the
US

4. US MOBILIZATION
• The massive mobilization effort brought the United
States out of the Great Depression
• The War Production Board was set up to oversee the
mobilization effort
• The Office of Price Administration set prices and
wages as well as instituted a rationing system for
food and fuel
• “Rosie the Riveter” popularized the idea of women
working in factories even though during the war
most took low level service –sector jobs or worked
as secretaries
• For minorities the war opened up several
opportunities for service across the United States;
especially in the military
