4. Background
• Visits in logistics clusters and logistics cluster development
organisations in Spring 2009
• Lessons learned
– Logistics development must be seen as a whole, including R&D, business and
marketing
– Sustainability (green logistics) is becoming increasingly important
– The role of the ports is vital as the heart of the transportation system and regional
development
– There is a common interest for networking among the European logistics clusters
and several initiatives at EU level
– Logistics clusters share analogies we all can learn from
www.neli.fi/projects/suloin
5. Why international network?
• Cluster development
– How do we compare our logistics systems; where are our weaknesses and strengths,
how do we improve our core competences and competitive advantage in the global
economy
• Best practice exchange
– Applicable development ideas from international benchmarking are valuable for
sustainable regional development and can benefit other sectors
• Continuum of results from previous & ongoing projects
– Internationalization of project results and application to regional and corporate
development

8. Ship- shore procedures
• The procedures at ship-shore interface require more attention and in SULOIN the problems
are approached by looking at practises internationally and then drafting guidelines for further
development
• The studies start autumn 2011 in Finland and abroad
• The studies should be finished during spring 2012
• The aim is to influence decision makers and international legislation to better take into
account the spefic requirements of operations at terminal level
www.neli.fi/projects/suloin
9. Looking for students interested in the following:
• To find out the effects of national and international legislation on
personnel operating at ship-shore level.
• To model the interface between ship and shore through handling of cargo
at the terminal (unloading and loading of material) in order to prepare
international standards and procedures
• To conduct an operative risk assessment of operations involving vessels
carrying dangerous cargo and the terminal level.
• To conduct a study assessing the qualifications of staff regarding cargo
handling, safety procedures and communication practices between ship
and operators.
• To prepare guidelines for operation at ship- shore (regarding vocational
qualifications, cargo handling procedures and safety practices.
