  • 1. SOCIETY What contributes to its development and what are the results?
  • 2. The Media
    • By the time a child is eighteen years old, he or she will witness on television (with average viewing time) 200,000 acts of violence including 40,000 murders.
  • 3.
    • Since the 1950s, more than 1,000 studies have been done on the effects of violence in television and movies. The majority of these studies conclude that: children who watch significant amounts of television and movie violence are more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior, attitudes and values.

    • Children are affected at any age, but young children are most vulnerable to the effects of media violence. Young children:
    • are more easily impressionable.
    • have a harder time distinguishing between fantasy and reality.
    • cannot easily discern motives for violence.
    • learn by observing and imitating.

    • Violent video games can cause people to have more aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; and decrease empathetic, helpful behaviors with peers.
    • Children who watch more TV and play more video games are not only exposed to more media violence, but are more likely to act more aggressively with peers and tend to assume the worst in their interactions with peers.
  • 6. Status
    • Social status is the honor or prestige attached to one's position in society. The stratification system, which is the system of distributing rewards to the members of society, determines social status.
    • Status refers to the relative rank that an individual holds; this includes attendant rights, duties, and lifestyle, in a social hierarchy based upon honor or prestige.

    • Many celebrities use their status as role models and icons to advertise and sell products related to health, beauty, wealth, etc.( Solomon Asch’s Halo Effect)
    • Unfortunately, these advertisements may send messages to the public stressing the importance of being beautiful or rich.
    • These misleading messages are some of the forces behind the growing number of problems in society.(ex: eating disorders, depression, suicide)
  • 8. Deindividuation
    • Becoming part of a large group, such as an army or a mob
    • Becoming engrossed in an interesting task
    • Meditation and other contemplative activities
    • FACTORS OF DEINDIVIDUATION:
    • Anonymity
    • Diffused Responsibility
    • Group Size

    • When you are in a group, you may feel a shared responsibility and so less individual responsibility for your actions. In this way a morally questionable act may seem less personally wrong. You may also feel a strong need to conform to social norms.
  • 10. “ The effects of mobs are particularly alarming as lynchings, riots and wartime atrocities have all been done during periods of deindividuation. Crowds give you the opportunity to hide and also allow you to share the blame, reducing the sense of individual responsibility. Uniforms and war-paint also help hide your true identity. Even sunglasses can support aggressive attitudes as they hide the eyes, a very important part of the individual.”
