Pachyderm is an easy-to-use authoring program that lets you create interactive multimedia learning modules for delivery on the web or in presentations. Pachyderm lets you create flash-based learning objects that combine video, audio, graphics and text into rich "nonlinear" user-driven learning experiences, without having to be a multimedia developer.

  • We’ll investigate the possibilities of creating learning objects and modules combined with the power of nonlinear digital storytelling, and explore the relationship between good storytelling and good instructional design. We’ll discuss what give stories power, and how we can tap into that power using a non-linear approach. We’ll demonstrate these concepts through the use of Pachyderm, an open source web-based, media-rich interactive flash presentation and authoring system. Pachyderm allows the construction of online nonlinear learning modules incorporating video, audio, graphics and text in a template-driven user-friendly environment. Pachyderm is an easy-to-use authoring program that lets you create interactive multimedia learning modules for delivery on the web or in presentations. See how others have used Pachyderm to create learning objects that combine video, audio, graphics and text into rich "nonlinear" user-driven learning experiences. We will highlight features of the new Pachyderm release 2.1, and provide resources to help you determine if Pachyderm is for you. Participants in this demonstration will have early access to registration for the next 2-day Pachyderm Training to be held later this Spring.

Head asked our IT guy to build a system from scratch…then they found Pachyderm at NMC.

    • 4. Digital Storytelling
      • Digital media is well suited for story-telling because it can combine various media types making stories more effective and interactive.
    • 5. Nonlinear storytelling
      • Process of choice creates narrative
      • Learners assign meaning to paths taken
    • 6. Pachyderm
      • A nonlinear approach to storytelling
      • Learners can use it differently
      • Instructional power of nonlinear storytelling: discovery learning …what we did as kids
      • It's the road not the destination!
    • 7. Pachyderm- What It Is
      • An easy to use open-source application to means produce online interactive multimedia presentations incorporating text, graphics, audio and video
      • Driven by templates (~12)
      • Flash-based output
    • 8. Pachyderm- What It Isn’t
      • Pachyderm is not a website.
      • It’s not a presentation tool.
      • It’s not linear.
        • e-Learning is typically linear
        • Web-browsing is often just moving through material to find what you want.
    • 9. What’s Cool About Pachyderm: Nonlinear storytelling
      • Learners assign meaning to paths taken
      • You want to tell a story, your audience wants to play!
    • 10. What Pachyderm does:
      • Eliminates flash programming and graphic design
      • Produces bulletproof presentations
      • Offers media asset management with metadata
      • Provides quick updateability
      • Publishes to other media - DVDs, etc
    • 11. What Pachyderm doesn’t do:
      • Flash interactivity design
      • Not the best choice for procedural knowledge
      • Not the best for large group presentations
    • 12. Planning for Pachyderm
      • A paper and pencil process
    • 13. Planning for Pachyderm
      • Uses templates
    • 14. OSU Pachyderm Goals
      • Encouraging more interactive websites
      • More engaging online learning
      • Developing Learning Objects Repository
