  • 2. + Quick Look at Nervous System and Medical Terminology  Function : To coordinate and control functions of the body. The system receives sensory input, makes decisions and the orders body responses.  Organs: Brain, nerves and spinal cord  According to dictionary.com, Medical terminology is language that is used to accurately describe the human body and associated components, conditions, processes and process in a science-based manner.  Medical Terminology contains four parts : word root, prefix, combing vowel and suffix
  • 3. + Suffix Suffix: At the end of the word For Example: -ITIS = Inflammation carditis= meaning inflammation of the heart
  • 4. + Examples of Nervous System Suffixes  -paresis = weakness  -phasia = speech  -plegia = paralysis  -taxia = muscle coordination  -trophic = pertaining to development
  • 5. + Defining of Two Nervous System Suffixes  -Plegia meaning paralysis  One of the most heard suffix
  • 6. + • Paraplegia= paralysis of the lower potion of the body and both legs  Pair-ah-plee-jee-ah  Para- = two like parts of pair ( prefix) • Hemiplegia = paralysis on only one side of the body • Hemi-ee-plee-jee-ah • Hemi = half (prefix)  Monoplegia= paralysis of the limb  Mon-oh-plee-jee-ah  Mono= one ( prefix)  Quadriplegia = paralysis of all four limbs  Kwod-rih-plee-jee-ah  Quadri = four ( prefix)
  • 7. +  -Phasia = speech  Aphasia = inability to communicate verbally or in writing due to damage od the speech or language centers in brain.  Ah-fay-zee-ah  A- = without ( prefix )  Dysphasia - difficulty in swallowing  Dis-fay-zee-ah  Dys- = abnormal, difficult ( prefix)
  • 8. + Absence seizure  According to dictionary.com, absence seizure if a type of epileptic seizure that lasts on lasts only few seconds to half a minute. It is characterized by loss of awareness and an absence of activity.  - Phasia and – plegia are two suffixes that are used in describing the signs and symptoms of this disease.
