Summary
At school, Cecil Jacobs taunts Scout
Atticus advises her to use her head rather than her fists
At Christmas, Uncle Jack comes for a week and stays at their place
Everyone notices that Scout is swearing to get attention
Jack talks to her
They all go to Finch’s Landing as usual

Aunt Alexandria’s is displeased with Scout’s attire
Scout doesn’t like Francis, Aunt Alexandra’s grandson
Francis calls Atticus a “nigger-lover” and makes fun of Dill
Scout swears at him and hits him
Jack scolds her for that
She says he doesn’t understand children
She tells him her side of the story, but makes him promise not to tell Atticus because she didn’t want to disappoint him

Atticus and Jack discuss Scout’s behavior
Atticus is worried about the effects of the case on Scout
He is worried that she and Jem will catch the “Maycomb disease”

Atticus, Uncle Jack, Scout, and Francis Cecil Jacobs, Jem, and Aunt Alexandra Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. Nearly everyone in Maycomb is against him. People start considering Atticus a shame to their town. Scout struggles at school from her classmates’ comments. Atticus explains to Scout that she will have to control her temper, because he believes what he is doing is right. Scout promises to do so, but breaks her promise when she hits Francis. Nevertheless, she hides it from Atticus to avoid disappointing him. Story Map
