7. Present Progressive Tense
The present progressive tense is how
you will say the "ing" sound in English
and describe what you are doing right
now: I am walking, he is sitting and
they are spitting.
To communicate this way you need 2
things:
1) a conjugated form of estar
2) a verb with -ando (-ar ending
verbs) or -iendo (-er & -ir ending
verbs at the end
Check this out noticing the numbers from
above:
Yo (1) estoy (2) comiendo. I am eating
El (1) está (2) cantando. He is singing.
This is different from yo como = I eat and
él canta = he sings
-ar verbs: nadar = nadando = swimming
jugar = jugando = playing
-er verbs: comer = comiendo = eating
-ir verbs: vivir = viviendo = living

Estar = to be for locations and temporary
conditions
Conjugations:

Form of Estar verb with -ando or
iendo
Estoy + hablando español. = I am speaking
Spanish.
13. Sobrar = to be left
It does NOT act like other
verbs. Observe.
If you have one thing left
(singular) use:
Me sobra un taco. = I have one
taco left.
Te sobra el yogur. = You have
some yogurt left.
Le sobra un dólar. = He has a
dollar left.
Nos sobra la tarea.= We have the
homework left.
Les sobra mucho dinero. = They
have a lot of money left over.
If you lhave 2 things left (plural)
use:
Me sobran doscientos dólares. = I
have 200 dollars left.
Te sobran doscientos colones. =
You have 200 colones left.
Le sobran cuatrocientos dólares. =
He $400 left.
Nos sobran cinquenta dólares. =
We have $50 left.
Les sobran las joyas. = They are
missing the jewels.
14. Quedar = Lack
If you like one thing (singular)
use:
Me falta el traje de baño. = I need
a bathing suit.
Te falta el abrigo. = You need a
coat.
Le falta un dólar. = He/she/it is
missing a dollar.
Nos falta la tarea.= We are
missing the homework.
Les falta la vacación = They need
a vacation.
If you like need or lack 2 things
(plural) use:
Me faltan doscientos dólares. = I
lack/need 200 dollars.
Te faltan doscientos colones. =
You 200 colones.
Le faltan las clases de español. =
He misses the Spanish classes.
Nos faltan los suéteres. = We
need the sweaters.
Les faltan las joyas. = They are
missing the jewels.
15. Venir de = to come from
Remember that venir has an irregular yo form
(vengo) and an e>ie stem change:
Yo vengo de
Tú vienes de
El/ella viene de
Nosotros venimos de
Vosotros venís de
Ellos vienen de
Ex:
Yo vengo de la escuela. I'm coming from school.

Adverbs Describe Verbs

19. How To Create an Adverb?
1) Change it to the feminine, singular form
2) + mente.
Examples:
Lento = slow lentamente = slowly

Part 1: Usando el español
Imagine a scenario based in Costa Rica. You might be
an exchange student, or a Costa Rican high school
student, or a tourist to Costa Rica
You will develop a written project in Spanish
describing your experiences in Costa Rica. You
should include material learned from all units (basic
conversation, school, housing, family, hobbies, food,
shopping experiences, and community). This project
should demonstrate the concepts and vocabulary that
you were taught in this course. Please reference the
Summary of Course Content provided in this section
for this purpose.

Record yourself speaking in Spanish (at least
two paragraphs) about how your school,
apartment, family, hobbies, food, shopping
experiences, and community in Costa Rica
compare to those in the United States.

What did you find interesting and exciting about
the Spanish culture?
What do you hope to learn if you continue to
study the Spanish language?
We have learned elements of a language in a
different teaching/learning style than you may

are. So if you are saying there is or there are in
your head in English, you will need Hay in
Spanish.
Don't say hay es.
Examples:
