  • 1. 6.7 Addition and Subtraction of Polynomials
    Objective:
    • To add and subtract polynomials
    • 2. To write the sum of polynomials in descending order
    Frameworks: 10.P.3
  • 3. To add polynomials, add like terms:
    Add:
    7x2 - 2x + 1
    4x2 + 3x - 6
    11x2 + x - 5
  • 4. Sometimes you have to sort first:
    Add:
    9y3 - 7y + 8 + y2
    7y – y3 – 3y4 - 3
    Sort:
    9y3 + y2 - 7y + 8
    – 3y4 – y3 + 7y - 3
  • 5. Add:
    5x2 + 7x5 - 8
    -9x2 + x – 2 – 6x5
  • 6. You can also use a horizontal form:
    5x2 + 7x5 - 8
    -9x2 + x – 2 – 6x5
    Sort in descending order:
    7x5 – 6x5 + 5x2 -9x2 + x – 8 - 2
  • 7. How would you simplify . . .
    -(5x2 + 7x5 - 8)
Change the sign of each term.
  • 8. Subtraction
    (5a2 - 3a + 6)- (2a2 - 3a - 2)
    Add the opposite:
    5a2 - 3a + 6
    -2a2 + 3a + 2
  • 9. Order
    Subtract0.2x3 - .5x + 0.1 from 0.4x2 + 0.3x – 0.7
    Which one gets subtracted?
  • 10. Turn to page 224
    Do 1-10
