Ouya, a USD 99 TV game console project using Android 4.0 has made a stunning debut on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter — hitting a million dollar mark after just 8 hours.

The game console is slated for a March 2013 release and the team behind it promise that it will offer a flexible and open gaming environment that the market wants, which will bring back the good old days of console-TV gaming. As of now, the sleek silver and black cube along with its equally cool controller are just on their prototype stage.

Ouya, a USD 99 TV game console projectusing Android 4.0 has made a stunning debuton the crowdfunding website Kickstarter —hitting a million dollar mark after just 8hours.The game console is slated for a March 2013release and the team behind it promise thatit will offer a flexible and open gamingenvironment that the market wants, whichwill bring back the good old days of console-TV gaming. 2. 2. Ouya founder Julie Uhrman said, ―It’s ironic, all the growth in gaming is moving to mobileplatforms, we’re seeing a lot of AAAdevelopers leaving their console shops to goto mobile, yet three out of every four dollarsis still spent in the living room, a majority ofgaming time is still spent on the TV, and ifyou survey any gamer they’ll tell you theirNo. 1 platform is the TV.‖
  3. 3. Ouya is now the fastest project inKickstarter to reach the million dollarthreshold in just 8 hours of going live. Theteam has initially hoped for USD 950,000pledges in one month for the consoles to beproduced. Support for the project has beenhuge that as of the time of this writing, barely 3 days of being online, the amount ofpledges reached USD 4 million already.―We never anticipated that it would blow uplike this,‖ said the Ouya founder to BlackHawk Reviews – Online Games.
  4. 4. Hardware specs for the Ouya console include8Gb of storage, 1Gb of RAM and NVIDIA Tegra3 processor which could churn out decent 3Ddisplay at 1080 pixels. They don’t soundimpressive and particularly powerful whencompared to PS3 or Xbox but it’s a prettygood bargain considering the price tag.And although it runs on Android, it shouldnot be expected to be have complete touch-based interface. Ouya will have standardwireless controller that includes 8 actionbuttons, a D-pad, 2 analog sticks and atouchpad for gesture-based controls.
  5. 5. The most appealing thing is that developerscould make games for Ouya minus anypublishing, retail or licensing fees thatusually come with creating a game. That’sbecause its OS is fully rootable and everyconsole will come with a free SDK pre-loaded on it. In fact, Ouya even welcomeshackers to tinker with the system —something that could also backfire to otherconsumers who might become targetsof fraud. The only condition they require is fordevelopers to have some of the gameplay forfree.
  6. 6. ―Our only requirement is that the gamerhave the opportunity to play some aspect ofit for free. We don’t like the idea that youpay $60 for a game and feel cheated. Wewant anybody to have the opportunity to trythe game,‖ Uhrman said.Still, Uhrman is of the opinion that majorgame publishers might also come on boardbecause their console could give them easyaccess to an open digital distributionenvironment — all without reducing theirgames’ values. The console will also reportedly supportgame-focused video streaming service,Twitch.tv.
