Proceedings of the IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (BHI 2012)Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China, 2-7 Jan 2012 Wireless Black Box Using MEMS Accelerometer and GPS Tracking for Accidental Monitoring of Vehicles N. Watthanawisuth, T. Lomas and A.Tuantranont, Nanoelectronics and MEMS Laboratory, National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Pathumthani, Thailand 12120 Abstract-In this work, wireless black box using MEMS end motorcycles [2-4] because these systems are still tooaccelerometer and GPS tracking system is developed for expensive for most motorcycles riders [5-6]. Thus, fallaccidental monitoring. The system consists of cooperative detection and accident alarm system for motorcycle hascomponents of an accelerometer, microcontroller unit, GPS recently gained attention because these systems are expecteddevice and GSM module. In the event of accident, this wireless to save life by helping riders to get medical treatment ondevice will send mobile phone short massage indicating the time. In this work, wireless black box using MEMSposition of vehicle by GPS system to family member, emergencymedical service (EMS) and nearest hospital. The threshold accelerometer and GPS tracking system is developed foralgorithm and speed of motorcycle are used to determine fall or accidental monitoring. In the event of accident, this wirelessaccident in real-time. The system is compact and easy to install device will send mobile phone short massage indicating theunder rider seat. The system has been tested in real world position of vehicle by GPS system to family member, applications using bicycles. The test results show that it can emergency medical service (EMS) and nearest hospital sodetect linear fall, non-linear fall and normal ride with high that they can provide ambulance and prepare treatment foraccuracy. the patients. I. INTRODUCTION II. SYSTEM OVERVIEW T HE motorcycle accident is a major public problem in many countries, particularly Thailand. Despite 00 00 0 0 00 0 0 0 00 W 00 0awareness campaign, this problem is still increasing due to 00 00 CI:I 00riders poor behaviors such as speed driving, drunk driving, 00 0 0 00 0 00 0 0 00 0 00 00riding with no helmet protection, riding without sufficient Hospitalsleep, etc. The numbers of death and disability are very highbecause of late assistance to people who got the accident. These cause huge social and economic burdens to peopleinvolved. Therefore, several research group and majormotorcycle manufacturers including Honda have developedsafety devices to protect riders from accidental injuries. MotorcycleHowever, good safety device for motorcycle is difficult toimplement and very expensive. GSM network Alternatively, intelligence schemes such as fall or incidentdetection with tracking system have also recently been Fig. I. Otherwise, classification of the fall detection utilized the 3-axis nonlinear fall is detected and position data from GPS moduleacceleration signal from MEMs accelerometer and the will be sent via SMS. While no fall condition is met, theground speed from GPS module. In general, motorcycle fall system will always return to starting point of the program.can be classified as linear fall and non-linear fall. The linearfall is concerned about fall without external force, which isfree falling condition that only z-axis acceleration changes. The non-linear fall occurs by the external force. The nonlinear fall detection is decided by all 3-axis acceleration datafrom accelerometer and the ground speed from GPS module. To determine the accelerometer output, two frames ofacceleration data, which include 3-axis acceleration atpresent time (t) and prior time (t-1), are used for analysis. For a linear fall, the z-axis acceleration follows free fallingcondition which is given by GetGPS IAJ , 9.7 mls2 (1) infonnationwhere the Az is the z-axis acceleration. In a non-linear fall, two frames of acceleration data are used. From non-linear Send SMSfall experiments under most likely situations, we found that (Fall Alann)the change of acceleration between two consecutive framesshould be more than 15. 5 mls2. Thus, the non-linear fallcondition is given by Fig. 2. Flowchart of motorcycle fall and accidental alarm system. IAn,1 -AnI_1 1 15.5 mls2 (2)Where the An t is acceleration from x, y or z coordinate atthe present time frame and An t-l is acceleration parameterfrom x, y or z coordinate in the previous time frame. Fromequation, if the difference of acceleration in two time framesis more than 15. 5 mls2, the first condition of non-linear fall (a) (b)accident of motorcycle is met. The ground speed from GPSmodule then used to decide whether actual non-linear fall Fig. 3. (a) Robust case and (b) device embedded under motorcycleaccident occurs. CONCLUSION In conclusion, an innovative wireless black box usingMEMS accelerometer and GPS tracking system has beendeveloped for motorcycle accidental monitoring. The systemcan detect type of accident (linear and nonlinear fall) fromaccelerometer signal using threshold algorithm, posture aftercrashing of motorcycle and GPS ground speed. Afteraccident is detected, short alarm massage data (alarmmassage and position of accident) will be sent via GSMnetwork. The system has been tested in real world 850
