A legend persists that afterHeracles completed his twelve labors, he builtthe Olympic stadium as an honor to Zeus. The most widely accepted date for theinception of the Ancient Olympics is 776 BC;this is based on inscriptions, found at Olympia,of the winners of a footrace held every fouryears starting in 776 BC.

There are winter and summer paralympicgames, which are held immediately following their respective olympic games. The present formal explanation for the name "paralympic" is that it derives from the greek preposition παρά, pará ("beside" or"alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the olympic games.

Also, large boycotts during the ColdWar limited participation in the 1980 and 1984Games.
