Quotes from participants on Value Based Leadership What did they learn?
Im so grateful for having participated inthis course. It is different in every wayfrom the regular leadership courses thatare offered in scouting in my NSO. It is agreat attribute of the course that theknowledge gained is not only relevant involuntary organizations. I can actuallyuse the knowledge to get a good startof my professional life. And I can use itto become a better person. The coursewill probably no less than change mylife a bit.
VBL was different from all other leadershiptraining or courses Ive ever had. Due to this,it can at times be difficult to label it as anleadership course when explaining to otherpeople. At the same time, it was the best leadershipcourse Ive ever taken. I really got to knowmyself better and how I act, react andbehave, and also why. Half way through Isometimes wondered what the leadershipaspects of the course were, but now whenthe course is over I can see that it is allabout leadership. I also realize how much Ihave learned about others and how Iinterpret others.
It has been a life changing journey for me and Imunbelievable happy that I applied for the course. Ididnt know what to expect but it was just amazing.Ive learned so much about my self, how I function andwhat drives me and what stops me. Ive learned thesame about others which has increased my knowledgein how different we are and how communication canbridge this differences. How I as an leader can listenand communicate to support each member of a groupand how to make it move forward. This course hasmade me believe in myself and in the future in a way Iwouldnt have believed even if you told me before. The tools are really great and thought through. To startwith values online and then continue with the IPU,fears and defenses where good steps towards a selfawareness together with the others in the group. Thereflection and sharing is strengthening.
Many things have changed. At the momentI am working on my weaknesses, what Ican improve or where I need to flex. I ammore at ease with people I would havetrouble dealing with before now that iknow how to approach them in a moresuitable way. I make a lot more consciouschoices than previously.
I have come to understand so much moreabout both myself and my interactionswith other persons. This has changed howI look especially at others and hopefullyalso my behavior towards others. Thethings that mostly has helped me is theopenness in the group during the course. Ihave over and over again had to reform myopinion of my fellow participants and this, more than any session about stereotypes, norms and labeling, has made me realizehow much I assume of a person from thelittle information I have.
It has been an amazing journey, duringwhich I have gained a lot of self-knowledgeand self-esteem. The course will withoutdoubt change the path my life will take thenext years. I have regained the motivationand drive to believe in my own skills anddare to start new leadership projects. Theknowledge about how others see me andmy improved understanding of why otherpeople behave the way they do willimprove my leadership skills and mypersonal skills.
The change means going from what nowseems like a total ignorance to awarenessand conscious choices. I dare say it hasbeen next to life altering, not only in termsof leadership - but also in the way I thinkabout myself, the future, my dreams.Suddenly everything feels possible at thesame time as I realize "I can have anything, but not everything".
Through the course I got a deeper understandingof my values and behaviors and why I have them.Through this understanding it was easier to seehow I acted in my relations to others, but alsohow I interpret and view others. I realized that Ihave a tendency to value people that are similarto me higher than others, not seeing differentpeoples potential and strengths. Before I startedthis course, when possible I would have choosento work with people that are like me, because Ithought it was the easiest and most efficient way.Today, I would choose a team thats not like me,that completes me and are strong at the skills thatI need help with. That is a deep insight and apowerful tool.
The course raised a lot of emotions, feelings, thoughts and awareness. Inaddition, I feel now more able to developand build relationships with people thatare different from me.
