3. 3. The Software 7.1Introduction

What we understand by computer encompasses a series of elements which are classified by:

Hardware :is the physical, tangible part of the computer, for example the screen, the keyboard.

Software : this is the programmes whose job it is to make the hardware carry out useful operations like windows, microsoft office, linux

But what is a computer???
 4. 4. The Software 7.1Introduction

The software is the group of applications that process the information. This is its structure:

Hardware Software Machine language Operating system Applications 010101011
 5. 5.

The operating system is the base program. It allows the computer to do the fundamental operations.

These are the fundamental operations:

To give a graphic display

To administer files

To control the hardware

The Software 7.2 The operating system
 6. 6.

The OS (operating system) gives a graphic display that makes easier to work with a computer. In the beginning we only had a black screen with letters and numbers. Nowadays we have nice windows

The Software 7.2.1 The fundamental operations Old graphic display Modern graphic display

 10. 10. The Software 7.2.2 Types of OS

You don’t have to use Linux, Macintosh or Windows. You can also create a unique OS for a company that allows them to carry out only their main operations.

For example, Navidul could have OS Navidul

OS Navidul
 11. 11. The Software 7.2.2 Types of OS

Diferences between Windows and Linux

It is more complicated, but it is stronger It is very easy to use, but it has a lot of errors There are no viruses There are a lot of VIRUSES It is an open system, so we can modify it together You cannot modify it It’s free ( 0 €) You have to pay for a license, which costs around 240€ Linux Windows
 12. 12. The Software 7.2.3 The OS structure

The Linux and Windows OS have a similar structure:

Wallpaper

Windows

Control panel

Explorer
