At CrisisCamp Toronto, we created this step-by-step guide to help anyone get involved. We volunteered on Saturday, February 27, 2010 for the Earthquake in Chile and the Pacific Rim Tsunami.

Create your workspace • You will need a number of browser tabs and online tools: • Twitter app/website, twitter search space, blog search • Translation Tool (Google Translate, Yahoo Babel fish, other) • Mapping Tool (OpenStreet Map, Google maps) • Ushahidi Report page (varies by crisis). (eg. reports/submit) • Wikipedia (to search towns, cities, countries etc.)
  • 3. Key Tasks • Look for common search terms, hashtags • Set up alerts, twitter columns or browser tabs to monitor for information • Analyze the content for relevance • Add report to Ushahidi
  • 4. There will be many tweets, blog posts etc. This is time consuming to review/analyze and choose. There will be key info that might be important to someone.
  • 5. What Should I Report? • Collapsed buildings • Medical emergencies • Vital communications • Major street/road blocks • Food/Water distribution

How to Add an Ushahidi Report • Open the Ushahidi report page: • Add all the content you have collected: • Report title (use keywords like location and category/type of report) • Description (add in English and a the local language) • Categories/define tag • Your contact info (this is optional, but might help) • Geo code info: Longitude and latitude. (open street map, google map or even wikipedia will have this) • Add the link of the tweet, news source, picture, video etc.
