Looking for journal articles for your research? - Presentation Transcript

    1. Looking for journal articles about your subject area?
    2. Important things to remember
      • Journal articles cannot generally be found by searching the main library catalogue
      • Google searches seem to give lots of hits but often you find access to the full text is blocked
      • What you need to do is to use some of the library databases.
    3. How to get started
      • Go to the Library subject guides
      • http://www.lse.ac.uk/library/qusugu/qusugu.htm
      • These pages have tips on the best databases to use for your subject area. Read the section on finding journal articles
    4. Choosing the right database
      • Remember to read your subject page for guidance
      • This will list the key databases
      • It will be possible to access some of them using a service called cross searcher
      • Others will need to be located by searching for their title on the LSE library catalogue
    5. What is Cross searcher?
      • A quick way to search some of the library’s main databases (indexes to journal articles and the catalogue) simultaneously
      • Go to http://zw4gk5cr3l.cs.serialssolutions.com/
      • Log in using your LSE Network username and password
    6.
    7. Key points
      • Choose a subject area
      • Click on the title to see the databases available for that subject area
      • Choose search by database to see the a-z list of everything available
      • The quick search defaults to title use the drop down list to search for other options
    8. Remember!
      • Cross searcher is very quick – but!
      • It may not search all the databases you need. Some are not available on the system due to technical or licensing restrictions.
      • It cannot offer advanced search features (eg restricting your search to book reviews)
      • It cannot be used to set up email alerts
    9. Cross searcher results
    10. Understanding the results
    11. Understanding the results
      • Use the boxes on the left handside of the screen to sort your search results by date, author or journal title.
      • The clustered results by topic orders the results by subject keywords. These may help you narrow down the results
      • But as they are generated by machine they may not make sense!
    12. How to get the full text
      • Click on the orange LSE article finder symbol to find out if the Library has the title (unfortunately we dont take them all!)
      • This will take you to the LSE ejournals page where years available will be displayed
      • These are simply the same titles offered via different databases.
      • Sometimes the years offered are different so check carefully
    13. Success!
      • Now all you need to do is log in with your LSE network username and password
      • Remember if the link doesn’t work
      • It is worth trying again. Sometimes the Internet can be tempermental!
      • Checking to see if a paper copy is available in the Library
    14. Going further!
      • Remember that not all databases can be accessed via cross-searcher
      • Find out other titles from the subject guides
      • Access them by going to the main lse library catalogue and searching by title.
      • Expand the record and click on the Linked resources option. Then enter your Lse network username and password.
    15. Dont forget
      • To make a record of all the articles you use – it will save time later!
      • If you have a lot of references to store. It is worth finding out how to use EndNote http://www.lse.ac.uk/library/guides/Endnote/Endnote.htm
      • Find out how to cite references properly http://www.lse.ac.uk/library/insktr/citing_referencing.htm
    16. Finally
      • if the article you need is not available electronically t ry the union list of serials to see if it is available in a London college http://www.inform25.ac.uk/ULS/
      • Find out how you can please an interlibrary loan request for materials not available nearby http://www.lse.ac.uk/library/idd/idd.htm
