An Evaluation of the use of Virtual Worlds for Learning and Teaching in Healthcare and its impact on practice – An action research project

Subject experts must gain an understanding of VWs to enable teaching and learning activities to be developed in - world and facilitate troubleshooting
Pre-course in-world practice is essential to enable easier transition for learning in VWs
Student engagement with the PBLs was increased compared to similar PBLs previously attempted by the author in other Virtual Learning Environments.
Despite some technical difficulties students enjoyed learning in a collaborative, synchronous, immersive authentic environment.
Students perceived that communication and negotiating skills formed in- world are transferable to the real world and improved real life communication.
All students felt the learning during the in-world PBLs was transferable to the clinical area.
Students believed their clinical practice improved during the module and after the PBLs
An Evaluation of the use of Virtual Worlds for Learning and Teaching in Healthcare and its impact on practice – An action research project Participants – 8 MSc students completed 2 PBLs scenarios in a virtual world Method – Mixed methods , individual diaries of their experience, self-assessment of learning in the PBL scenario. The experience itself is very immersive. Think this is a combination of the software environment (CSL lab) and the avatars. Really get the sense of interacting with the group . Chat logs enable reflection, feed forward and changes to be made before the next activity
Collaborative group work in VWs can help students form social relationships and their own in- world etiquette
