  • 1. Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System for Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform G1000 Virtualize, Simplify Operations, Improve Efficiencies and Reduce Costs Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) delivers the storage return on investment, security and quality of service to applications that companies require to thrive in today’s information economy. An evolution of Hitachi Base Operating System, it brings forth the heritage of the unique embedded virtualization capabilities of Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP). Hitachi SVOS is an integrated software system that provides the foundation for global storage virtual- ization. It abstracts and manages heterogeneous storage systems to provide a unified virtual storage layer, resource pooling and automation. And SVOS performs these tasks at enterprise scale with enter- prise performance and reliability. It creates a virtual storage environment that is available, automated and agile. With self-optimization, automation, increased operational efficiency, and improved performance and storage utilization, SVOS delivers the most re- turn on your storage investment. OVERVIEW
  • 2. OVERVIEW Global Storage Virtualization SVOS includes support for a global storage virtualiza- tion that brings together and integrates multiple VSP G1000 systems with new global active devices*. Global storage virtualization connects and integrates multiple virtual- ized storage platforms with active-active clustering and volumes that span phys- ical systems. Global active devices are the spanned virtual volumes. Spanned active-active volumes offer simplified high-availability server configurations and attractive distributed architecture advan- tages for concurrent applications in 2 site designs. In this environment, integrated SVOS storage system software provides system element management and advanced storage system functions. Such functions include storage virtualization, thin provi- sioning, storage service level controls and performance instrumentation across multi- ple storage platforms. Problems Solved Enterprise IT is becoming overwhelmed by the amount and variability of data, appli- cations and change required to support today’s information-intensive businesses. IT is hindered by complex storage infrastruc- tures and processes that are expensive, laborious and don’t keep up with today’s business needs. Simplification is needed to reduce complexity and the operating cost of running the infrastructure. To meet this need Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System delivers an enterprise-ready global storage virtualization environment. And it provides the environment without adding appliances and network connections. Hitachi SVOS abstracts information from storage systems, virtualizes and pools avail- able storage resources and automates key to centrally manage Hitachi storage systems along with virtualized 3rd-party storage. Device Manager is included with SVOS and provides user, logical, physical and host management views that enable configura- tion, provisioning and storage pooling for primary and secondary storage. It offers multiple levels of security and resource par- titioning for disks, ports and administrators. Its reporting capabilities enable capacity analysis based on server or application, or physical storage class usage. A complete command line interface (CLI) management interface is also included. Additional Hitachi Command Suite prod- ucts are available for specific advanced management functions, such as data mobility and performance analytics. (See “Complementary Solutions” section.) SVOS Benefits Continuous Operations, Virtualization and Mobility ■■ Supports virtual storage environment, spanning local and remote physical storage systems with global storage virtualization. Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System delivers the high availability, automation and agility needed to get the most return on your Hitachi enterprise storage investment. data management (configuration, mobility, optimization and protection) functions. This unified virtual environment maximizes the utilization and capabilities of your stor- age resources. It also reduces operations overhead and risk. Standards-compatible for easy integration into IT environments, SVOS industry-leading storage virtualization and management capabilities enable the upmost agility and control. SVOS helps to build infrastructures that are continuously available, automated and agile. Management and Control SVOS allows organizations to take advantage of Hitachi automated storage provisioning and tiering, unified manage- ment and protection, and data mobility capabilities. It supports these abilities within a single standalone system or across an entire heterogeneous storage pool. The primary SVOS management tool, Hitachi Device Manager, provides an easy-to-use and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) * Separately licensed feature available after initial release. Ask your HDS representative or partner for more information. LEARN Learn Storage Virtualization
  • 3. 3 ■■ Improves performance, reclaims capacity and simplifies storage provisioning with advanced thin provisioning. ■■ Virtualizes heterogeneous external storage systems; enables older external storage with SVOS capabilities, such as thin provisioning, heterogeneous replication and virtual server environments support. ■■ Active-active support for storage volumes spans local and remote physical storage systems and provides for continuous opera- tions with global active device feature*. ■■ Virtualizes and automates mobility between tiers for maximum performance and effi- ciency with Hitachi Dynamic Tiering*. ■■ Enables advanced control of online volume migrations. Hitachi Tiered Storage Manager* moves data for performance or opera- tional reasons, within a storage system or between virtualized storage systems, with- out server or application disruption. Configuration and Control ■■ Consolidates and rationalizes storage and storage management points. Configures the storage system for mixed Microsoft® , UNIX, Linux, mainframe and VMware vir- tual server environments. Provides simple, consistent, administrative operations across storage systems. Enables access from anywhere using secure protocols. ■■ Manages storage from a business per- spective. Creates logical views that are not tied to physical assets. This approach forms a storage architecture that provides the required service levels of cost, per- formance, reliability and availability for the different needs of different applications. ■■ Supports secure multitenancy, resource partitions and enterprise authentication system integration. Integrates Hitachi storage with other management systems through SNMP and CIM/SMI-S. ■■ Provides Hitachi Dynamic Link Manager Advanced for advanced multipathing and centralized management of distributed SAN multipath configurations. Self-Balancing and Automated Performance and Capacity Optimization ■■ Automates efficient use of storage capac- ity and performance. System self-adjusts and optimizes to changing performance and capacity requirements. www.HDS.com/innovate Innovation is the engine of change, and information is its fuel. Innovate intelligently to lead your market, grow your company, and change the world. Manage your information with Hitachi Data Systems. ■■ Leverages the benefits of Dynamic Provisioning to allow block and file environments to use both internal and virtualized storage more efficiently and optimize automatically. ■■ Ensures storage service levels to indi- vidual servers or applications. Allows workload balancing and performance troubleshooting. ■■ Reduces administrator workload: Administrators no longer need to micro- manage the storage system. They can take advantage of advanced data dis- persion technologies and dynamic load balancing to automatically improve and optimize performance, reduce waste and maximize storage utilization. * Separately licensed feature.
