  • Hitachi Data Systems converged infrastructure journey began in 2009This transformation doesn’t happen all at once and it isn’t a one size fits all propositionThese steps are iterative, so we can also think of them as focus areasAs progress is made, new opportunities will continue to emerge in each of these focus areasDisruptive technologies are examples of this. Yesterday’s NSX announcement from VMware will likely be one of them. And, as you focus on one area, let’s say automation, you may find that you need to make improvement in another area, perhaps virtualization or convergence. As you progress on this journey, you will:Provide the business value your customers require with further reductions in CAPEX and OPEX, which ismuch needed with today’s fairly flat budgetsThis will be iterative and you don’t have to start by throwing everything away
  • Two major trends:UNIX/MF to x86 – Modern business applications are developed for x86 first and there is no faith in the long term roadmap of some flavours of unix (eg. Solaris, HPUX). As businesses move away from proprietary systems we can start to build solutions that use common components for all applications.Integration is nearly ¼ of all IT Spend - CIOs want to move resource from high risk, low value integration tasks to value add innovation. They want to accelerate release cycles and they want their IT departments to focus on delivering competitive edge rather than doing the Vendor’s job. While IT continues to struggle with some traditional challenges, new opportunities and new challenges keep popping up. New Applications like social networks or mobile apps which people can use from anywhere pose new challenges, risks and opportunities for you and your organization. To address these challenges, half of the organizations in a recent IDC report stated that they will be moving to a converged infrastructure over the next couple of years. That represents a significant shift in how organizations acquire and use technology. And continuing the transition to a software-defined data center or cloud-based computing models, in just 2 years 50% of organizations surveyed will be moving their archive to the cloud – we need to be ready for this shift and so does our infrastructure.
  • We envision this – one platform for all workloads. One that is flexible enough to handle the most demanding applications, in both virtual and non-virtual environments. And it needs to address the unique requirements of mission-critical, business-critical and general workloads – SAP, Oracle, and Exchange, SQL and other Microsoft applications, in additional to end-user computing or virtual desktops.Benefits include (from bar at bottom)
  • UCP Pro software platformThe focus here is on the red line – the REST API / CLI that insulates customer from the infrastructure and even the virtualization platform – protecting customer investment into the future (they will be able to use the same API to talk to VMware vSphere, MS Hyper-V, OpenStack, etc.) This functionality is part of our sustainable differentiation – VCE will never be able to truly deliver on this, because it would be a conflict of interest for VMware (the V part of the VMC)
  • Our blade design is identical to Cisco’s UCS B200 M3 blade (including CPU selection and memory capacity)CB500 6U chassisQ: How do we refresh blades, cycle? Refresh w/ new blades into same chassisQ: CB500 designed for virtualization. What does that mean? 1. density, small footprint 2. amount of memory 3. redundancy – ethernet, FC, SVPThe Hitachi LPAR technology is not meant to be a competitor to VMware, Hyper-V or other software virtualization technologies.  It is a complementary feature that customers can utilize on their Hitachi servers with or without other virtualization software.  Hitachi is the only manufacturer with servers that feature hardware partitioning, or LPARs, within the INTEL server architecture.  This is especially important to customers with mainframes or RISC based systems where they are using LPARs, and they want to move to a less expensive, open-systems environment.HITACHI LPAR (logical partitioning) Features: 1.    Security -our LPAR technology segments server memory in a secure manner such that OS environments deployed on our servers do not share memory providing protection against hacking or OS flaws that could result in security breaches.  VMWare, Hyper V, KVM, and other hypervisor virtual software implementations cannot provide this level of protection. 2.    Performance - our partitioning is at the firmware layer, and therefore the operating system and applications do not communicate through a software virtualization layer.  The OS & applications can run "native" within an LPAR and do not require special drivers or versions of the software.  This allows customers to run custom or old programs in LPARs that may not perform well in other virtualized environments. 3.    Software licensing costs - we can segment how we distribute memory, IO capacity, and CPU cores to drive down software license costs.  Here are a few examples:a.   With SAP, we can provide the application environment maximum IO and memory resources while limiting the amount of CPU capacity to just what the application requires, thus saving on license costs (which are CPU based).b.    With Oracle the licensing fees are based upon CPU cores on a system.  If the system has virtual machines via a software solution like VMware or Hyper-V, then Oracle aggregates the cores on the entire system and charges a license fee based upon all cores.  If the system has hardware partitions (Hitachi LPARs, Sun Containers, etc) then Oracle license fees are based upon the cores within the hardware partition. There are other softer benefits that customers are also considering, like the reliability and isolation of the LPARS, better I/O performance, and the flexibility to use both hardware and software based virtualization technologies.
  • Excellent partner relationship w/ BrocadeCisco design is around the corner (in this designBrocade in-chassis ethernet switches are replaced w/ pass-through modules) in-chassis FC switches remain Brocade – Cisco customers do not have an issue with Brocade FC.Cisco design scales to 128 bladesQ: v2.2 do we ship w/ Cisco switches? YES, we include Cisco 5k top-of-rack switches.Q: will orchestration work the same w/ Cisco? People using Cisco 1000v vs. VMware VDS will have a different experience, because the 1kv ..
  • We do bolt-on to VSP today, but we could do HUS VM as well16 ports are required for bolt-onWe’ve qualified 100, could do any that speak FC
  • UCP Pro software platform
  • What are these new opportunities??1. 50% of all Vblock deployments run some portion as bare metal2. Customers require bare metal installation for legacy / High performance applications. In 3.0 in addition to ESXi UCP will enable provisioning of customer’s Windows/Linux images.(Support for Windows Server & Red Hat Linux)
  • Templates - Standardized uniform deployment. What is a Template:Defines a hardware configuration. Network (vlans), Storage (type & capacity of pools) + OS and provision that configuration to one or more blades. We want to make it super easy to configure clusters. Why?Cluster provisioning with VMware is too complicated and error-proneSay you set up a high-availability cluster: If you make even a simple mistake, you’re not HA (no checks/validations)
  • One of the biggest asks from the customer base is more monitoring of the converged infrastructure. 2.0 we offered the ability to monitor availability of the elements in UCP3.0 we expanded upon that story and are offering the ability to now monitor components within each element (power supplies, temperature sensors, fans). This allows us to warn users of a possible outage before it actually does happenWe are also allowing other customers to plug into our monitoring framework by pushing these monitor states to an AMQP broker allowing users to subscribe and leverage our Monitoring frameworkThis opens the door to applications developed by the customer and can be used for integrations such as VCOPsThe built-in information is then pushed to an AMQP broker which allows end users to subscribe and leverage our monitoring framework. This opens the door to many applications such as a VCOPs Integration or any customer application that they decide to use
  • Generated graphs for each performance counter to show trends over the past day, week, month, or year to allow users to identify any spikes or irregularities in the elementGive the flexibility to the user to set warning and critical thresholds to trigger alarms based off their usage in the data center
  • Generated graphs for each performance counter to show trends over the past day, week, month, or year to allow users to identify any spikes or irregularities in the elementGive the flexibility to the user to set warning and critical thresholds to trigger alarms based off their usage in the data center
  • Anyconverged infrastructure solution requires a means of updating the various hardware and management block components of the product in a non-disruptive manner.UCP Pro 3.0 will support firmware and management block software updates.(animation)The customer will import a tested and approved UCP Pro Update Pack into UCP Director and will be guided through the update process for the various hardware components in the solution. In addition, the management block will have a guided update process that allows the customer to update the management block software in the field. Our flexible update process allows one-at-a-time or batch updates with downgrade capability.
  • As we become proficient at the single converged infrastructure level, we need to move up the ladder and provide our customers with a way to monitor and manage multiple UCP Pro instances through a unified portal. They get that with the new UCP Datacenter Director shipping with UCP Pro 3.0.We designed the Datacenter Director with expansion in mind. Datacenter Director provides the authentication, authorization, and user interface infrastructure for a set of injectable applications. Datacenter Director comes with our Monitoring application that consolidates the task of monitoring multiple UCP Pro installations into a single user interface. The Monitoring application leverages our AMQP design to transport monitoring data from UCP Pro instances to the Datacenter Director Monitoring application. In addition to Monitoring, the customer has the option of purchasing the Disaster Recovery application for Datacenter Director.(animation)The Disaster Recovery application supports easy configuration of Hitachi Universal Replication or True Copy replication technologies between two or more UCP Pro instances. Datacenter Disaster Recovery works in conjunction with VMware Site Recovery Manager to provide a best of breed disaster recovery solution that is configured by the customer and not by service personnel.Once replication connectivity is established between the UCP Pro instances, the customer is free to configure their disaster recovery solution to their requirements. If requirements change in the future, it’s easy to add and remove protected virtual machines from the configuration. All this without GSS service engineers on site.In addition to configuration, Datacenter Disaster Recovery will monitor replication between UCP Pro instances and will alert the user if there are problems. The system will also warn the user if journal usage exceeds specified thresholds for proactive monitoring of disaster recovery issues.Datacenter Disaster Recovery will orchestrate the expansion of an existing replicated volume, a first in the industry capability.
  • Speaker Notes:(note: need permission to use this quote – taken from GSKO video)Hitachi storage solutions are comprehensively tested and certified for interoperability with all versions of VMware. We participate in all VMware vStorage programs for storage vendor partners.both companies’ engineers collaborate on creating deeper integrations and new solutions to meet evolving customer needs
  • In the recent past HDS unveiled their information cloud vision. Hitachi has a unique 3-tiered strategy – comprises of the infrastructure cloud, content cloud and information cloud Infrastructure cloud – allows you to have one platform for all data wether file, block or object and allows you to re purpose your current infrastructure.Content cloud – extracts the value of the data. It is about content awareness and intelligence . Ability to index, find and search information.Information cloud – is about the ability to refine the value of the data. It is about information analytics and repurposing the value of the data. So how does HDS fit into the VMware journey. The strategic fit is at the infrastructure layer which offers the customer a joint journey to the private cloud. Offering of HDS at the content cloud and information cloud are complementary to the VMware solutions.
  • Beginning in v2.1, we have developed a rich web-based client version of our UCP Director software. The UCP Director web client offers ease of use to the customer as it has cross platform support and can be run using any standard web browser. Additional features such as inventory lists, related objects and portlets offers a more comprehensive view of the datacenter to the vCenter administrator.Like our “thick” or server-based version, the web client version of UCP Director is tightly integrated within VMware vCenter and its graphical user interface. Developing a web client version of UCP Director is in keeping with VMware’s strategy of developing web-based client versions of all their major applications and management tools. Our web client version of UCP Director offers all the features and functionality of our “thick” server-based version of the software and even extends functionality in certain places
