Introduction: <ul><li>The reality in society today is that there are vast differences in the abilities students have in working with computers or even having access to computers </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers must be aware, in the way they teach and access students’ work, of the gaps that exist in terms of technology </li></ul>

Evaluating Homework: <ul><li>When marking, a teacher’s assessment/evaluation must: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Help students learn </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Inform students how to improve </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Diagnose the problems </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Point out inconsistencies in completed work </li></ul></ul>

Tradition vs. Reality: <ul><li>Traditional methods of evaluating homework would be relatively easy as students would be assessed quickly by simply checking if the answer is right or wrong </li></ul><ul><li>There would be less emphasis placed on the appearance of the homework and more emphasis was placed on the actual content </li></ul>

Tradition vs. Reality: <ul><li>Today, teachers can be easily bombarded by the aesthetic value of their students’ work and may not be as focused on the content of their students’ work </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers must work hard to evaluate their students’ work based on content and, at times, this means they must ignore the level of aesthetics </li></ul>
  6. 6. Assessing the Situation: <ul><li>Can the ‘computer poor’ student fairly compete with the ‘computer wealthy’ student? Do our schools need to provide the resources to make the playing field even? </li></ul>

Defining the Terms: <ul><li>A ‘computer poor’ student is: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A student without access to a computer </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with limited access to a computer, or with access to an out-of-date computer </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with little or no knowledge of how to use a computer </li></ul></ul>
  8. 8. Defining the Terms: <ul><li>A ‘computer wealthy’ student is: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A student with frequent access to an up-to-date computer and who has sufficient knowledge of how to use a computer </li></ul></ul>

  11. 11. Results of Computer ‘Wealth’: <ul><li>Higher literacy skills </li></ul><ul><li>Internet research can help develop problem-solving skills </li></ul><ul><li>“Academic performance proves to be higher as the frequency of computer use at home increases” </li></ul>
  12. 12. Results of Computer ‘Poverty’: <ul><li>Lower math skills </li></ul><ul><li>Overuse of computers in leisure time </li></ul><ul><li>Less instances of plagiarism </li></ul><ul><li>Computers used for instruction have not been clearly correlated with success </li></ul>
