2. During the film opening of Superbad the camera freezes individually on the three
protagonists to immediately show the audience what each character is like. Also
each protagonist has a comedic facial expression which indicates that this film is a
comedy. The font and colour of the protagonist's names are very effective as the big,
bold, bright colours will make sure the audience remember the characters names.
The three protagonists are all portrayed as unpopular and are also shown to be isolated
from everyone else. From the film opening the audience get an understanding that these
three friends are the nerds of the school and this is shown by the way they are dressed.
The first protagonist is wearing a waistcoat with a shirt underneath and has glasses, this
is what most people commonly portray a nerd as, however the second protagonist is
wearing a long polo shirt and has a bag on, the colour of his clothes also relates back to
the stereotype of a nerd. The third protagonist is shown as someone who is trying to
move away from the stereotype as he is wearing a t shirt underneath his shirt which
shows he is trying to be different.
3. The camera then immediately cuts to an eye-line shot of the protagonists reaction.
The protagonists' reaction to his friends mothers breasts is comical as he has his
mouth open and is daydreaming this shows how fascinated he is, also in this shot
we can see that he is not listening to his friends mum whilst she is speaking this
again shows us that he is dreaming.
During the opening scenes of the film opening we get a over the shoulder shot of the
protagonist starring at his friends mothers breasts. This is effective as it shows us the
sort of comedy which will be shown during the film. This shot shows us what the
protagonist is thinking and also we get an understanding of how the director has
portrayed the protagonist. This is in relation is effective as teenagers in society would
find this funny, this is the sort of things that teenagers these days would be amused by
also this relates to teenagers in other ways such as some teenagers have been in this
situation before, the fact that other teenagers can relate to this shows us that this film
is aimed at teenagers
4. During the film opening of Superbad there are two main setting which are shown and
they are the protagonists school and several different house parties. The opening shot
starts off with the protagonist driving to school, whilst driving to park he breaks one
of the school rules this shows that he does not abide by the rules and does what he
likes. Also, during the party scenes we get a shot of the protagonist dancing with a
girl in a funny way. This shows us that although he may be portrayed as a nerd
during the film, he is also quite popular with the girls.
This links to the audience as the film is a teen comedy, all of the situations throughout
the film opening are situations teenagers would commonly find themselves in. During
the film the denotation of the film becomes quite clear and that it is three protagonists
trying to become socially popular.
5. Throughout the film opening there are many different types of shots. For example the
most common shot in this is the close up shot, when one of the protagonists are
speaking the camera shot changes to a close up as it shows us the facial expression and
is also effective for the emotional state of the protagonist. Another benefit of using a
close up shot is that the viewer is drawn into the protagonist’s personal space and
shares their feelings. Also, the close up which is used when the girl asks one of the
protagonists what he done during the weekend is extremely effective because we get to
see his reaction, he scratches his head which shows us that he a bit puzzled of what to
say. The director cuts to a close up of her reaction and we see that she is about to laugh
this shows us that she thought about his weekend.
This links well to the audience as it indicates the sort of situations teenagers can get
stuck in when talking to girls.
