  2. 2. What is Radio broadcasting • Radio broadcasting is a one way wireless transmission that reaches a wide range of people because of the radio waves. Radio can be done via satellite radio , Cable radio, Local wire television networks and streaming media on the internet. There are two different types of Radio broadcasting; Digital and Analogue.
  3. 3. Public service broadcasting • • BBC music is part of the British Broadcasting corporation. Most of the national radios provide all musical styles covered in their broadcasting sessions. BBC radio 1,2,3,4 and 5 live are all accessible through analogue as well as on the internet using Real media and BBC iplayer ETC. The remaining BBC stations can only be available on digital platforms.

The BBC’s revenue is about 5 billion pounds, this was reported in 2011/12 and they currently have over 23,000 employees. The BBC is publicly owned by a legal entity corporation that go by the name of The Crown.

These stations include music from the 20th century , and also phone in debates for the audience to talk about certain issues that have been addressed on the news. • • • The BBC run 11 national radio stations, These 5 are national. (UK) BBC radio 1 - BBC radio 2 - BBC radio 3 - BBC radio 4 –BBC radio 5 (live broadcast) BBC radio 1XTRA - BBC radio 4EXTRA - BBC radio 5 live sports extra - BBC radio 6 Music – BBC asian network.

Digital radio stations Platforms that digital radio can be played on: DAB - Freesat - Sky - Internet Streaming - FreeView Here are a few Digital radio stations: BBC Radio 1 XTRA - Plays mostly urban music , music documentaries , in-house Live music sessions and other live music sessions. BBC Radio 4 XTRA - Plays Science fiction, drama, fantasy, children, and classic comedy programmes. BBC Radio 6 Music - Plays a variety of music styles such as Rock, Funk, reggae, Punk and also they have live music sessions and music documentaries. BBC Asian Network - Aimed at a wide south asian audience that live in the UK. Regional Stations Regional stations like to focus on local issues. Heres a list of some: BBC Radio Scotland - Music, News and talk from Scotland. BBC Radio Wales - News, Sport, Music and talk from Wales. BBC Radio Orkney – News, Music, sport and talk from Orkney BBC Radio Ulster – Northern Ireland talk, music , news and sports.
  7. 7. BBC world service international • BBC world serve is the worlds largest international broadcasting company. It is available in 28 languages, It has been reported that about 180 million people tune in on a average week. It broadcasts to many parts in the world via analogue and digital shortwave, Satellite, FM and MW relays. BBC world service is commercial free. They are currently Funded by Grant-in-aid, from the foreign, common wealth and the british government. The world service currently does broadcasting in a house in London.
  8. 8. The License fee • The license fee that BBC has is used almost entirely to fund their domestic television, radio and internet services. The money they received represents about 75% of the cost of these services, with help from BBC worldwide the profit they make made the remainder of the money.

Who else does the BBC own • The BBC have some of their programmes displayed on the big screens in addition to the Radio and television they put out many big screens located in several central city locations. The foreign and commonwealth office are owned by the BBC so they can do BBC monitoring which they can use to monitor their radio, television, the press and the internet world wide.
  10. 10. What is commercial radio • Commercial radio is the process of broadcasting television and radio programmes by privately owned corporate media as apposed to state ownership. Commercial broadcasting is based on the practice of airing radio and television adverts for profit. This is to compare to public broadcasting, which receives government subsidiaries and avoids to pay most of the advertisements.

BBC local radio Most well known Local commercial radio stations in London are: Heart 106.2 – LBC 97.3 – Magic 105.4 – Capital 95.8 National commercial radio There are three big groups that dominate the local and regional sector. There are over 250 in the UK. Mostly using DAB and FM frequencies. Classic FM use about 100 FM and they play Classical music. Absolute radio mostly played in the morning, about 1215 waves used and they play Pop and rock music. talkSPORT Also mostly played in the AM, use about 1053 -1089 and they talk about whats been happening in the sports side of things. These are three of the national commercial radio stations broadcasted throughout the United Kingdom. advertisements on Commercial radio? Commercial radio stations make the most of their revenue to sell airtime to advertisers. If a business provides valuable consideration like cash for instance, in exchange the radio guy could put the advertisement in their live broadcast.
