Redis is a database. A lot like memcached, everyone knows of memcached right?
The data model is very simple: a large list of keys (which are strings), and values associated with those keys. Basically a giant hashtable, like ones in Ruby or Python. There is no schema.
Data sits in RAM, not on disk.
Screams . Show that it’s as fast or faster than memcached, esp. with larger data sets.
Redis = Remote Dictionary Server. In addition to strings, can have lists, sets, and ordered sets as values.
That’s not all, you can also perform atomic operations on your data, like pop & push, update & remove elements, range select, union/intersection etc.
Dataset gets flushed to hard disk periodically. Can be read back from the dump. In a separate process – does not slow down operations on dataset. You can also do operations on keys like selecting keys matching a pattern, getting a random key, setting TTL on a key.
1. Redis supports replication right out of the box. 2. You can distribute your keys across several servers using consistent hashing . 3. Authentication. 4. Multiple databases on the same server. 5. Data sets may be bigger than RAM – soon.
Very easy to get started with. Written in ANSI C so will compile on any Linux system, OSX, BSDs etc. Even Windows with Cygwin. Client libraries for: Python, Ruby, Perl, Tcl, Java, PHP, Erlang, Lua etc.
What is it useful for? Well, you can use it just like memcached – put it in front of an SQL database. But thanks to the support for data structures and persistence it can be used on its own. Very versatile: 1. All sorts of logs and counters. 2. Cheap, reliable message queues. 3. Storing object properties in a webapp etc. At Vidiowiki we use to store metrics data on user actions, for caching, and to store session data that is shared between several internal apps.
Big users of Redis – see recent blog post on architecture. Released Resque, a library for creating background jobs, placing those jobs on multiple queues, and processing them later based on Redis
Arch: single-process, event-driven – doesn’t have to deal with locks. Can run several instances to take advantage of multicore. A data dump is a serial or append-only write – simple IO subsystem. Done in a background process – doesn’t affect speed of reads or writes on the main database. (The background flush in Redis is designed the following way – Redis process forks and justs dumps the database it has in the background. Unix copy on write takes care of getting another copy of pages as they are modified. This keeps overhead rather low. The database is dumped in temporary file which is renamed only after fsync which means if you crash during the dump you simply discard partial file.) Pipelining support in the protocol – can send multiple commands in one request and Redis will process them and return the result.
