Problem: 2 x (8-2) + 6 = x
Don’t forget “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”
That means we first need to do what is in the parentheses first!
2 x (6) + 6 = x
Next we need to Multiply!
12+ 6 = x
Now we can add to get the answer!
x = 18

Word Problem?

16. In most word problems, the reader must filter through
the provided information to write out the equation
on their own. Then the equation can be solved.
The key to filtering out information to solve word problems is to look for
key words to tell which operation is needed to solve the problem.

23. For Example: Susy and Jennifer decide to work together to earn
money twice as fast. They both work at their uncle’s shop for 4
hours. Each girl earned $9.00 per hour. How much money did they
earn together?

Re-write the problem replacing key words with symbols, creating a problem.
2 (Susy and Jennifer) x (4 (the number of hours worked) x 9(pay per hour))
2 x (4 x 9)
2 x (36)
Answer: 72

24. When solving word problems, it is very important to always
remember the order of operations. After the word problem has been
put in the form of a numerical problem, the rules that apply to the
order of operations must be used to be sure the correct answer is
formed.

25. Solve the following problems for a Homework Grade.
1. (10-7) + 7 x (8-3)
2. 4 + (8/2)
3. 16 – (18 x 3 -1) x 0
4. A farmer gathered 8 eggs from his 3 chickens. His wife used 10 of them to make
breakfast. How many eggs are left?
5. There are 42 sheep in the barn. Each sheep has 2 lambs. How many animals are in
the barn?
6. Trey brought his mother 18 roses. One half of the roses dies. He then brought his
mother twice as many roses as he did in the beginning. How many roses does she
have living now?
