Earth in space and time

 1. 1. By: Anne Marie Hart
Earth in Space and Time
2. 2. Our solar system!
*Eight Planets
*4 Rocky Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars
*4 Gas Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
*Moons, comets, asteroids, and dust
3. 3. The Sun
*About 5,000 Celsius!
*Sustains all life on Earth
*Closest star to the Earth
4. 4. How big is the sun?
*Basketball=sun
*Pea=earth
5. 5. Earth: our home!
*Fifth largest of the eight planets
*About 93 million miles from the sun
*About 70% water
*Has a 23.5% tilt
6. 6. Earth’s motions
*Earth has three motions:
*Spins on an imaginary line
*Travels around the sun
*Moves through the milky way
7. 7. Earth’s rotation
*Full rotation=24 days
*Earth rotates every 24 hours
*Earth orbits the sun every 365 days
8. 8. The seasons
*The earth’s axis creates the seasons
*We live in the northern hemisphere:
*summer=facing the sun
*winter=facing away
9. 9. Seasons diagram
10. 10. Moon
*Does not create it’s own light
*Reflects the light of the sun
*Significantly smaller than earth
*Has no life of any kind
11. 11. Night/day
*During a rotation night/day
*Earth facing sun=day
*Earth facing away=night
12. 12. Moon phases
*The moon is always circling the earth
*As it moves, its appearance changes
*One month=One full cycle
*Lets take a look!!
13. 13. Moon phases cont…
14. 14. Did you know?
*Pluto is not a planet 
*We have four dwarf planets!
*Ceres, Pluto, Eris, and Makemake
*Solar system = 4.6 billion years old!
15. 15. Lets Review!
*The sun
*Earth
*Moon
*Night/Day
*The Seasons
