  2. 2. Screen tempo • This is a good example of an ident that utilizes tempo. The ident is cut to some fast paced music and the dancing feet all dance in time with it. It is an interesting ident because the sound goes perfectly with the visuals with different people jumping in and out to the beat. It uses the fast pace to keep peoples attention on the ident and to draw them into it. For me it is an interesting ident however it has no crescendo and the music is constant and the dancing is not building up to a climax. However the ident is still good because it does what it is supposed to which is brand the channel and keep the audience interested and having a fast pace is one way to do this.
  3. 3. Space and time • This is a good example of an ident that takes the opposite approach to space and time but still uses it effectively. In this ident the world that we are set in is clearly rural England as it is a dune setting for a BBC ident. To go with the target audience for BBC 1 it is quite a cinematic and sophisticated ident. With kite flying being seen as something for the adult generation. The people who inhabit the ident are these people. Adults and older people all having fun creating the circle with the kites. This is in complete contrast to the other ident in many ways. This is mainly due to the target audience but also the fact that the "Kites" ident is in the real world and has to show what the weather would have to be like to fly those kites. Whereas the other can do anything it wants because its in a made up world. However both are still effective idents. This is a very good example of an ident that plays with space and time. This refers to weather an ident is set in the present time/past or future. And weather it is in a real or fictional place. BBC 3 have created a completely knew planet for their suit of idents and have built it by mashing together lots of the fun elements of their channel and random elements from popular culture. The world revolves around the theme of tubes that carry pink goo that makes up the logo for BBC 3. The world seems very fun and carefree with the population of the world being flamboyantly dress people who seem to live for fun. This links into their target audience of being a young channel for young people and the design of their world reflects this. This is a perfect example of how designers can create interesting and new visuals specifically designed to attract their audience.
  4. 4. Interaction with viewers This is a very good example of an ident that interacts with its audience to engage them and make their ident memorable. The theme with this ident and the rest of the suit that it belongs to was to have channel 4's logo embedded somewhere in the ident and the audience tries to find it. Some of the idents are easier than others and this really makes the audience engage with the ident. This is a very good tactic for making an audience remember your channels idents. Because the ident makes the audience work to figure it out they will remember it for positive/negative reasons. I think that Channel 4's idents are one of the best examples of this. a
  5. 5. Density of information • This ident is the complete opposite end of the spectrum to the BBC ident. The information that it is portraying is the same as the BBC's ident which is just what channel you are watching but there is so much more going on on screen. In this ident we start by following some falling nail varnish but as it falls it turns into lots of different items and continues to multiply and grow across the screen. Whereas in the BBC ident there was lots of space in the shot, this ident is very close in and the content is very busy. This is another good way of catching the audiences eye. Because there is lots going on it makes the viewer concentrate on the ident and seek out the information. This also means that people are more likely to remember the ident because it sticks out.
  6. 6. Information and entertainment led • This is a very good example of an ident that is purely for entertainment rather than information. Apart from the small MTV logo in the corner there is no other hint as to what channel it is apart from the style the ident is made in. Instead the ident focuses on following the Alice in Wonderland figure around as she explores the interesting world that she is in. I think that it is an effective ident because it draws the audience in and really makes you want to follow her through this land and discover what is going to happen. And even though there is not an obvious thing showing that this is an MTV ident there is enough that you can still tell who it belongs to but not focus on it.
  7. 7. Branding • E4 uses the brand color purple it is a certain shade of purple that they use in all of there logos and sometimes in there idents as well they use this so people will recognize the channel and know that it is the channel it is. QuickTime™ and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.
  8. 8. Packaging and repackaging • The Purposes of a TV idents is to give the stations some kind of identity and a distinct and instantly recognizable branding. The branding is the values and morals of the station. For example the BBC mission statement is to enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain. This can be reflected in there 2006 suit of idents that display different cultural aspects. When idents are being created for TV programs one of the main concerns of the company is the marketability of the idents they are making and how the idents will create a corporate identity for the company. The corporate identity of a company is the person that they give themselves. This can be interpreted as the personality of the channel itself. For example, MTV idents support their appearance of being a young hip channel that is in tune with what the younger generation want. For a company their idents will define there channel and what is about and will also reflect the values and style of there target audience. TV idents have evolved a lot over the years since they were first made. For example in 1953 the BBC TV ident was nothing more than a static image with their name underneath and an image of a world shaped object. In my opinion this object is supposed to show the world and how the BBC broadcast all over the globe because they are and were an international station.
  9. 9. Segmentation Scheduling • Idents are scheduled in-between shows, this is to remind people of what channel they are watching as well as entertaining them at the same time, for example on E4 they will show an ident before a show just to remind people what channel they are watching and also incase someone has just switched on to the channel, and its in the adverts the ident would come on and they would recognize what channel they are watching.
  10. 10. Marketing • The marketing for example E4 they would advertise there channel by using there idents as the idents are an advert for the channel, as they promote the channel and increase the audience so more people will watch it, as the ident will include the logo therefore people will see the logo and know and watch the channel.
  11. 11. Identity • An example of identity in E4 is where you can identify the channel and know what the channel is about and what audience it targets, for example the E4 ident is animated and brightly colored and included toys shooting lasers, from this you can see it’s a modern entertainment, comedy sort of channel aimed at the younger appeal of audience.
  12. 12. Scheduling • The scheduling of a channel is what sort of programmed they broadcast and why, for example they would have a special program organization on E4 on Thursdays called ‘quite big Thursday’ this is when they would play the most audience popular audience, and they would also play age appropriate channels after 8;30 which is the water shed, so after 8;30 they can do age appropriate comments and refrences and its when children go to sleep and when adults come back from work.
