3. 3. TYPES OF COMPUTERS

There are three types of computers.

Digital

Analog

Hybrid

 4. 4. DIGITAL COMPUTERS

The word digital means “numeral”. The word digital is derived from digit.

Digital refers to information represented in discrete (individually district) form – usually in binary or two-state mode (i.e. OS and IS)..

 6. 6. ANALOG COMPUTERS

On the contrary, most phenomena are not digital, but analog-having continuous variables. Temperature, pressure values, light and sound for instance can fall any where in the range. The high, low and in between states have been represented historically with analog rather than digital.

 7. 7. ANALOG COMPUTERS

Computers that works with analog data are called analog computers are usually measuring devices

Examples of analog computers are speedometer, thermometer etc.

 8. 8. HYBRID COMPUTERS

In addition to digital and analog computers, there are computers that are designed and built to work with both digital and analog data. These computers are referred to as Hybrid computers.

These computers combine the characteristics of both the Analogue and the Digital computers.

 9. 9. HYBRID COMPUTERS

Used in specialized applications where both kinds of information need to be processed.

Egs: Money counting machine, Automated teller machine
