Transcript of "Task 4, research into music industries and institutions"

 1. 1. Research into music industries and institutions The International Publishing Corporation Ltd (IPC) was formed in 1963 after the merger of the UK's three leading magazine publishers – George Newnes, Odhams Press and Fleetway Publications – who came together with the Mirror Group to form the International Publishing Corporation (IPC). Since then, IPC have produced many different genres of magazines such as men's lifestyle brands, woman's weeklies, TV entertainment and lifestyle brands. But those three original magazine businesses each had their own illustrious history, having been established in 1881, 1890 and 1880 respectively, with a number of the titles they launched in the late 19th Century still being published today under the IPC umbrella. And when The Field, launched in 1853, joined the IPC stable in 1994 following the acquisition of Harmsworth Magazines, it saw our family tree reach back even further.

While the main audience for This magazine has been men and higher class women.

IPC Media over the years have produced over 60 iconic media brands including Country Life, Golf Monthly, NME, Rugby World, Marie Claire, Chat and Mizz. These iconic media brands have reached almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men which is altogether 26 million UK adults. The websites have also reached over 20 million users every month.

Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine? What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might be likely to publish? Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?

NME (New Musical Express) is a well known music magazine published by IPC as well as their other music magazine Uncut. NME figures have been decreasing because of its audience being able to access the online version at www.nme.com however, this doesn't mean that a new music magazine wouldn’t be popular with a wide audience. As different genres of IPC's magazines are becoming more popular, a magazine focusing on a different genre of music to other magazine’s has the potential to be a very successful magazine.
