Year B: Baptism of the Lord (Mark 1:4-11) - Presentation Transcript
Mark 1:4-11
John's baptism was a baptism of repentance to usher in the new age of the coming of the Messiah.
Jesus came to be baptized by John as a sign that he IS the new age in person.
Jesus emerged from the waters of the Jordan as he would arise from the tomb at his Resurrection.
Christ's baptism inaugurated his whole public ministry, climaxing in his Passion, Death and Resurrection.
Jesus was anointed with the Spirit, manifesting his divine Sonship: "You are my beloved Son, on you my favor rests" (Mk 1:11)
Our own baptism means a new birth, a new life in Christ and the forgiveness of sins through water and the Spirit.
Our baptism unites us in Christ with the other members of Christ's Body, the Church. It is our union with Christ that makes us "Church".
Through our baptism we share the divine life in an on-going, progressive way that looks ever to the future.
