The History of Film 2) The Zoetrope 1) Leonardo Davinci The Zoetrope was a rotating dome where the viewer could experience the illusion of motion from a rapid successionLeonardo DaVinci was a man well ahead of his time. of static pictures.In his manuscripts around 1490 he talks about the‘Camera Obscura’ which was a device that projectsan image of it’s surrounding on a screen.Leonardo explored what is known as the persistenceof vision“The eye remembers what it has just seen after theobject has disappeared” 4) Lumiere Brothers 5) The Lumiere Brothers took inspiration from the sewing machine to create a Cinematograph which acts as aCamera Obscura recording and projecting device. 3) Leland StanfordIn 1872 Leland Stanford the governor of Californiamade a $25,000 bet that a horse takes all four feetoff the ground when galloping.To prove his point he mounted a line of cameras 6)along a race track and tripped the shutters to picture 5) The Arrival of the Trainthe passing galloping horse. The first motion picture to be presented to a large audience was December 28th 1895. The scene depicted a moving train, the scene startled the audience into a panic as the film showed the train moving towards them.Do you think he won or lost the bet?
