11. 11. Interdisciplinarity as a challenge 1

Conventional human knowledge

In the past: few intellectuals who excelled in wide range of knowledge and worked across various subject areas.

Polymaths

Ibn Sina (Avicenna): (980 - 1037) the foremost physician and philosopher of his time He was also an astronomer, chemist, geologist, logician, an astronomer, paleontologist, mathematician, poet, psychologist, scientist, teacher and a translator.

Al-Farabi: (872-950) a Muslim polymath and one of the greatest scientists and philosophers of the Islamic world in his time. He was also a cosmologist, logician, musician, psychologist, sociologist and a translator.

More people, more specialties: (division of labor)

Competence in specialization: (Specialization has its own advantages)

Shortcomings of human knowledge: ( one can never excel in different fields at a time)

Slide http://translationinfo.webs.com http://www.freewebs.com/hsalhi Translation and Interdisciplinarity 26th and 27th March 2010
 12. 12. Interdisciplinarity as a challenge 2

A translator of all trades is Master of none

Translators who work in all fields do not have a deep enough knowledge in any of them. It is just like the difference between a general practitioner and a specialist doctor .

Economic challenges

Interdisciplinarity and the sought quality and efficiency

Cultural challenges

ITC requires a very developed cultural competence which is not easy to acquire (respecting the diversity of perspectives)

Professional and social challenges

Professional associations are now working on behalf of their members. It is always easier for a translator to succeed as an individual than when member of a group.

Slide http://translationinfo.webs.com http://www.freewebs.com/hsalhi Translation and Interdisciplinarity 26th and 27th March 2010
 13. 13. However, this degree is not always a degree in translation, therefore it is not a degree in ITC

Slide http://translationinfo.webs.com http://www.freewebs.com/hsalhi Translation and Interdisciplinarity 26th and 27th March 2010
 14. 14. A translator’s knowledge and the new frontier

The translator and the Internet

“ The internet offers unparalleled advantages to the different actors in the translation industry. It provides them with a rich body of information, reduces their reliance on local sources of information, and also provides them with a wealth of data from past and highly trusted translations. It likewise allows for online collaboration and consultation of experts in all domains, rendering the translators output more accurate and more reliable .” Salhi (2010: 12)

The translator and corpora

Can serve as monolingual or multilingual lexis resources

They help accelerate the translators’ work

The Massive online collaboration

More assignments are carried out collectively.

The ultimate process undergoes a whole process starting from translation to proofreading and then to editing, and reviewing by specialized skillful reviewers

Slide http://translationinfo.webs.com http://www.freewebs.com/hsalhi Translation and Interdisciplinarity 26th and 27th March 2010

 16. 16. Final Message آخر الكلام

T echnology and collaboration are really efficient ways to overcome the shortcomings the translator’s knowledge and address the above-mentioned challenges. After all ITC is an imposed choice by globalization. One cannot imagine an interpreter leaving his booth just because the speaker starts a topic outside his field of specialty. Thank You وشكرا / Merci / ANY QUESTIONS ?

http://translationinfo.webs.com http://www.freewebs.com/hsalhi Slide Translation and Interdisciplinarity 26th and 27th March 2010
