How can scientists use twitter as a tool? How live tweeting and the use of twitter can break down the geographic barriers of scientific collaboration. A simple how-to, as a part of the Social Media for Scientists Symposia at WA-BC AFS/ SER NW/BC joint annual meeting in Victoria, BC. • Hi Everyone, thanks for coming. My name is Jessie Hale and I am an undergraduate at the University of Washington and Communications officer for AFS UW. Today I am going to talk to you about how scientists can use twitter as a tool.
  • So what is twitter? Twitter is a real time information stream.Users compose tweets that are shared with their followers. You can follow anyone with a public account and you view tweets chronologically. Most importantly, twitter is what you make of it, and what you view depends on who you follow.
  • A tweet is the essence of twitter. A tweet is similar to a status update on facebook, it is a short message that is limited to 140 characters. You can link to videos, images and websites.

  • You can customize your background
  • Hashtags are critical for twitter use. 3 boxes: Examples of hashtags: In depth uses of #hastags, conferences (short, w/ year), networks, topics, #winning, can be anything. Key word

  • A great example of live tweeting was James Cameron’s Dive to the Marianas Trench, the deepest point in the ocean at almost 7 miles below the surface. Live tweets made his work accessableto people who wouldn’t have access. James used his tweets to engage others in conversation, educate and answer questions. While Joshua Drew makes an excellent point that if James Cameron can tweet from the bottom of the ocean, you can too, he wasn’t really live tweeting because his tweets were sent from the surface by a team member. However, his tweets reached…Tweets with pics

  • “consistently boosts retweets, @mentions, and new followers” – Twitter developersInforms others who are unable to attend conference/talkincrease public awareness of a conservation issue (climate change, overfishing etc.)Starts a conversation that can be continued after the conference with the same groupHones your ability to convey scientific information in a succinct and clear wayIn my mind, most importantly twitter breaks down the traditional geographic boundaries of scientific collaboration
  • One of the reasons for live tweeting that I mentioned was increasing your online presence. Tweet Reach is a tool where you can visualize your impact by searching a hashtag or handle. These stats show the number of accounts reached by the last 50 tweets using the hashtag #soSEAPanel discussion
  • there is an etiquette. set apart your “live tweets” from your day to day tweets (conferences often decide on a hashtag, such as #rest12 or #scio12 beforehand) add examples instead of text
  • While there is an art to live tweeting, the best way to learn is to do it!

    • 18. What should you live tweet about?• Summarize• Add• Ask questions• Images
    • 19. Live Tweeting Best Practices• Use a hashtag to announce to your followers that you will be live tweeting a certain conference• Each tweet should stand alone as much as possible
    • 20. Live Tweeting Best Practices• Laptop distracting to others, sit it back• Polite to ask presenter• If you are in a conference where you are worried about the presenter or the audience not knowing what you are doing, ask for announcement of hashtag• Just do it!
