History of the BLuecoats

Founded in 1972
By Babe Stearn and Ralph McCauley, Canton police officers and directors of the Canton Police Boys’ Club.
They did not come out for a season in 1979 and 1983
2010 was the first time that the Bluecoats medaled in DCI World Finals
They received the bronze medal (3rd place)

Traditions
Perhaps the most recognizable tradition is the long shouts of “BLOOOOOOOO!!!” that welcomes the corps to the field and praises them after their performances.

The signature “BLOO” began in 1987 when the “drum break” drove the fans to their feet. The resulting “BLOO” and applause went on for 30 seconds (the longest standing ovation in drum corps history) before the corps was able to continue with their finale. As such, the tradition was born.

Another is their annual “home show” near their hometown of Canton, Ohio.

Their “home show” is apart of the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities.

Traditions
Each year every member is given a necklace with pennies on it.

The pennies are on a shoelace.
You get the shoelace after your first real performance with the Bluecoats and it represents the fact that you are no longer considered to be a rookie.
You then get your pennies on the last day of the season.
The American penny is dipped in

silver and represents the year that you
marched.

You then get a penny from each

country that was represented in the
Bluecoats that season.
Autumn leaves
The song “Autumn Leaves” is the corps’ signature song. It was used in their show in 1987 ( the first year the corps made it into finals) and it has been apart of the corps repertoire since then. It can be heard in every encore that the corps performance in after shows and in impromptu concerts in the parking lot after competitions. The corps will normally gather in a group, wrap their arms around each other and sing this song after they have an amazing performance.
Spring training
The Bluecoats have their spring training at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

It lasts for 4 straight weeks
