Introduction - Sales and Marketing are two aspects of trade which are equally important for doing business. They are also both very dependent on each other. While marketing is done to attract customers or clients in a variety of ways, sales is the whole process involved in delivering the goods as required by the customer. Only good marketing would just attract customers whereas they may not be convinced during sales to purchase it, which would lead to a low conversion ratio. With good sales but no proper marketing, prospective customers would never be aware of what goods the company has to offer. Which gets us to say that, sales and marketing have a lot of distinction between them and thus also in the jobs they entail.
Marketing A marketer will come up with new ways and techniques to attract customers to buy his product or service. He has several ways to promote his product, he may advertise by way of the print medium, broadcast medium, or even through online channels. Apart from advertising a marketer also uses several other methods to get the message across, such as
Sales A Sales person takes the deal forward after the marketer has brought him in. Here is where the interested parties get into a personal interaction to negotiate and chalk out a plan to meet the needs of both sides. The salesperson would give out further details not mentioned by the marketer and cater to all the queries and suggestions of the customer. He will give relevant information about several aspects about the product, such as,
customization requirements if any,
information about the products and services,
terms and conditions.
Conclusion Thus the role of a sales person has more of a client servicing approach where as the marketer is the one who works on getting newer ways to get clients for the sales team. Both have their share of challenges , a marketer has to think of new and effective ways to attract, especially with the amount of competition in the market; while the sales team has to work out ways to get the customer what he wants in the best possible way, without sacrificing a lot for the company. The marketing and sales team need to co ordinate with each other at each level and integrate the process of sale to get the most optimized solutions. That is the difference in the role and scope of work for marketing and sales. And the two, with the different duties and responsibilities in each department combine together to give the desired result.
