    • The "Salt March" to the ocean caused a great international sensation. Theyprotested against the tax on salt. Mahatma Gandhi and his followers tookonly a few lumps of salt from the ocean and symbolically violated the Britishsalt monopoly.Sixty thousand participants were arrested, Gandhi among them.This number of prisoners far exceeded the capacity of British jails.
