TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENTSUSTAINIBLE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Arts Journalism SAQA Accredited curriculum, held over 7 days Attendees: 15 Learners Skills Transfer Unemployed youth are taken through short production courses thats funded by the festival and then placed in all the various departments of the festival, Attendance: 51 Duotone Photographic Exhibition This year the prestigious photographic exhibition paid tribute to Winston Mankunku and ran for the duration of the festival. Arts and Crafts ‘’The CCDI-facilitated craft workshop at the CTIJF has grown from strength to strength. Last year’s sales topped R52 000 in just two days, and this year was no different. Youth Music Workshops This workshop was hosted by FAWU & leading Cape Town musicians, for youth in Gugulethu and surrounds. 15 learners Gigs for Kids Pre-schoolers experience fun and explore the magical world of music. The toddlers were introduced to the sounds of a variety of instruments, different rhythms and helped to compose simple melodies. For professional and established musicians Attendance: 100 Musicians Free Community Concert This free concert takes place prior to the festival Green Market Square and is the Festival’s commitment to communities who cannot make it to the paid sessions of the Festival Attendance: 12050
  4. 4. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT : WORKSHOPS PROGRAM As part of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s commitment to the development of the Music Arts industry, the festival proudly presents a series of Workshops that takes place at various venues throughout the CBD and greater Cape Town area.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT : ARTS JOURNALISM Event Description This seven day workshop is aimed primarily at qualified journalist, freelancers and journalism students who uses the festival as a springboard for creative arts writing and reporting. This course incorporates both theory and practical techniques and is SAQA recognised. Jazz lovers unable to attend the festival at the CTICC get the opportunity to see some of the amazing local and international talent on the line up. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT : DUOTONE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION Event Description: The Duotone Gallery annually showcases the work of international and local photographers that uniquely capture the essence of ‘ jazz in motion’’ and documents the emergence and growth of jazz globally. Many of the images are exclusively premiered at the Duotone Photographic exhibition and free to the public prior to the festival.   30. 30. 1. Most of the visitors originate from the Western Cape and Gauteng Provinces. 2. Visitors mostly spend 6.3 nights in Cape Town, and prefer to stay in hotels. 3. Festinos travel to Cape Town mainly for the purpose of the Festival and spend most of their money on accommodation, followed by food and restaurants, and transport to the Festival. 4. They are satisfied with the variety and quality of productions, as well as with the venues, and would definitely attend the Festival again in 2011. 5. The most significant type of media is radio and word-of-mouth, which emphasises the importance of quality productions, and the delivery of good service throughout each Festival. 6. The highest single category of festinos to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival is between 35 and 49 years of age, is mainly English speaking and mostly female. The average age of a visitor is 37 years 7. The impact of the festival on production is approximately R112 million, and this represents the value of the Festival to the economy of the Western Cape. 8. The festival generates R43 million directly based on visitor spending and the total direct spending amounts to R52.6 million. 9. This event creates 731 jobs (temporary and permanent) in the Western Cape, excluding the employees directly involved in the organising committee. 10. This is an important event not only for Cape Town but also for South Africa in general. This is important from an economic, an arts and social point of view.
