  1. 1. Apps for Science Class Stephen Taylor
  2. 2. Today’s SmartPhones are smart… With more computing power than Apollo 11 in the pockets of many students, we could take advantage of these devices in science class! 2Apollo 11 Moon Landing image taken from http://history.nasa.gov/ap11ann/kippsphotos/apollo.html
  3. 3. In our school, most HS students useMac and many have iPhones or iPads. Here are some of my favourite free or reallycheap apps to install to turn your phoneinto a super science device. 3 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  4. 4. PowerOne Scientific Calculatorhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/powerone-scientific-calculator/id405987042?mt=8 Why do I like it? It’s a free scientific calculator for your device. What’s not to like? iPhone iTouch iPad 4 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  5. 5. DailyCalcs Science Calculatorhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/dailycalcs-science-calculator/id353223512?mt=8 Why do I like it? Very handy lab calculator for making up solutions in Chemistry. Can also be used in cell cultures. iPhone iTouch iPad 5 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  6. 6. i-Nigma QR Code Readerhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/i-nigma-qr-code-data-matrix/id388923203?mt=8 Why do I like it? Quick and easy QR Code reader. Use with QuikQR.com to set up activities. iPhone Here’s an example (http://wp.me/p7lr1-1kB): iTouch iPad 6 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  7. 7. Lab Timerhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/labtimer/id292202454?mt=8 Why do I like it? Very handy lab timer, which can run four timers with alarms at the same iPhone time. Great if you have your experiments staggered and need to remember when to record the results for each one. iTouch I think the iPad version can show more timers at the same time. iPad 7 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  8. 8. Pocket Light Meter (free)http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/pocket-light-meter/id381698089?mt=8 Why do I like it? Quick light meter (lux) readings. Open the settings and additional info. iPhone iTouch iPad 8 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  9. 9. iElementshttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ielements-periodic-table-chemical/id413632149?mt=8 Why do I like it? A simple periodic table app which gives more information iPhone about each element. Just enough information to easily navigate our HS Chem class. iTouch iPad 9 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  10. 10. Click Counterhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/click-counter/id382980702?mt=8 Why do I like it? Perfect for any counting activity, such as cell counts. It times the clicks, and produces cumulative graph. Better still – results can be emailed as .csv. iPhone iTouch iPad 10 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  11. 11. iSeismometerhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/iseismometer/id304190739?mt=8 Why do I like it? Makes good use of the iPhone’s accelerometer to give readings iPhone in three axes. Could be used for acceleration labs. Data can be easily emailed or uploaded. iTouch It also rings an earthquake alarm! iPad 11 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  12. 12. Simple Radar* Gunhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/simple-radar-gun/id442734303?mt=8 *no, not really. Why do I like it? It’s not really a radar speed gun. Set the known distance and hold the iPhone screen to start the timer. Let go to stop. v = d/t is calculated right away, giving the velocity. Cool. Units can be changed from km/h to iTouch mph, though students will need to carry out their own calculations to get to m/s. iPad 12 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  13. 13. Decibel 10http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/decibel-10/id448155923?mt=8SoundLevelhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/soundlevel/id349863667?mt=8 iPhone Why do I like it? You could spend hours on this app! iPhone iTouch iPad 14 Images taken from the iTunes app store for each app or screenshots from my own iPhone
  15. 15. Gray’s Anatomy – Student Editionhttp://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/grays-anatomy-student-edition/id478710041?mt=8 Why do I like it? Because it is a brilliant set of anatomical drawings! You can even connect many Pasco probesvia bluetooth, as long as you are prepared to buy an expensive adapter.Apparently the cost is due to the chip required for bluetooth with Apple. 25
