  • 1. Howard University Cancer Center (HUCC) CORE Program C ommunity O utreach for R esearch E xcellence
  • 2. HUCC CORE Purpose
    • Educate- Use evidence based approaches to inform the community about general health promotion, cancer risk reduction, early detection, and treatment
    • Empower- Work collaboratively with culturally and linguistically diverse communities to build capacity for informed decision-making and community health advocacy
    • Engage- Reduce barriers to care and increase access to and utilization of evidence-based interventions, especially within medically underserved communities
  • 3. HUCC CORE Services
    • Provide input on study design to assure feasibility of recruitment
    • Develop tailored recruitment and retention plans
    • Identify and maintain partnerships with organizations that may serve as study collaborators and assist in recruitment
    • Provide ongoing community education and outreach to promote interest in research study participation
    • Create and maintain a database of potential participants for cancer research studies.
  • 4. HUCC CORE Capacities
    • Strong, longstanding partnerships with diverse groups of community organizations, stakeholders, opinion leaders, and advisors
    • Skilled community health educators
    • Expertise in community-based participatory research, community-academic research partnerships, and building research teams
    • Technical assistance and training for community researchers
    • Evidence-based information on community research engagement, building research capacity, and strategies for disseminating research to communities
